Impact of Personal Budgeting Education on Financial Planning Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Personal budgeting education is an important component of accounting education because students require practical skills to plan, allocate, monitor, and control their personal financial resources. Accounting education students possess foundational knowledge of accounting principles, but this academic knowledge may not automatically translate into effective personal financial planning and budgeting practices. Students may face challenges such as irregular income, rising living costs, impulsive spending, limited savings, poor expenditure monitoring, and inadequate long-term financial planning. Personal Budgeting Education provides students with structured learning experiences that enable them to prepare personal budgets, prioritize financial needs, monitor expenditure, establish savings targets, manage available income, evaluate financial alternatives, and develop realistic financial plans. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of personal budgeting education on financial planning skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Financial Literacy Theory, Experiential Learning Theory, and Self-Regulated Learning Theory. Financial Literacy Theory emphasizes the importance of financial knowledge and skills in enabling individuals to make informed decisions concerning the management of financial resources. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through practical experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation, providing a suitable framework for students' participation in budgeting activities. Self-Regulated Learning Theory emphasizes goal-setting, planning, monitoring, self-evaluation, and behavioural adjustment, which are important processes in effective personal financial planning. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how personal budgeting education may influence financial planning skills among accounting education students. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible accounting education students. Personal budgeting education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to personal budgeting lessons, income planning, expenditure classification, needs-versus-wants analysis, budget preparation, savings planning, emergency-fund planning, expenditure tracking, cash-flow management, financial goal-setting, debt planning, investment planning, financial forecasting, budget monitoring, variance analysis, budgeting simulations, personal finance case studies, spreadsheet-based budgeting exercises, digital budgeting tools, lecturer guidance, feedback, and opportunities for repeated budgeting practice. Students' financial planning skills will be assessed using indicators such as setting short-, medium-, and long-term financial goals, preparing realistic financial plans, allocating income among competing needs, preparing personal budgets, monitoring expenditure, controlling unnecessary spending, establishing savings targets, planning for emergencies, managing debt obligations, evaluating investment alternatives, forecasting future financial needs, monitoring progress toward financial goals, adjusting financial plans when circumstances change, maintaining personal financial records, analysing personal cash flows, evaluating financial risks, and making informed financial decisions. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized financial planning skills assessments, personal budgeting tasks, financial decision-making scenarios, budget preparation exercises, spreadsheet-based activities, competency-based assessment rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, budgeting education experiences, financial knowledge, and financial planning skills. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of personal budgeting education on students' financial planning skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, financial planning skill scores before and after exposure to personal budgeting education may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving conventional accounting instruction without structured personal budgeting activities to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that personal budgeting education has a significant positive impact on financial planning skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and practical personal budgeting education are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to prepare realistic budgets, allocate income effectively, monitor expenditure, establish savings goals, plan for emergencies, manage debt, evaluate financial alternatives, and adjust financial plans than students with limited exposure to personal budgeting activities. Practical budgeting exercises may help students understand how limited income can be allocated among essential needs, discretionary spending, savings, and future financial obligations. Expenditure tracking and budget variance activities may improve students' ability to identify spending patterns, control unnecessary expenditure, and adjust their budgets when actual spending differs from planned amounts. Financial goal-setting activities may strengthen students' ability to develop realistic short-, medium-, and long-term financial objectives and establish measurable strategies for achieving them. Spreadsheet-based and digital budgeting activities may further strengthen students' ability to organize financial information, monitor cash flows, and evaluate personal financial performance. However, limited income, rising living costs, peer influence, consumer pressures, unexpected expenses, poor financial habits, and students' difficulty in maintaining consistent budgeting practices may reduce the effectiveness of budgeting education. The study therefore expects practical, continuous, student-centred, and behaviour-oriented personal budgeting education to contribute significantly to improved financial planning skills among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on personal budgeting education, financial planning skills, accounting education, financial literacy, financial education, experiential learning, self-regulated learning, personal finance, budgeting behaviour, savings planning, expenditure management, financial goal-setting, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, accounting education departments, accounting educators, financial institutions, financial literacy organizations, professional accounting bodies, curriculum developers, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving students' personal financial capabilities. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating personal budgeting education into accounting education programmes, increasing practical budget preparation and expenditure-tracking activities, incorporating spreadsheet and digital budgeting tools into instruction, strengthening students' financial goal-setting and savings planning skills, developing realistic personal finance case studies and simulations, training accounting educators in practical financial education methods, providing continuous feedback on students' budgeting activities, and equipping accounting education students with the financial planning skills required for responsible personal financial management in Nigeria.
