Impact of Financial Record Retrieval Exercises on Students’ Accounting Information Management Skills in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Effective management of financial records is an essential competency for Accounting Education students because accounting personnel are required to organize, store, retrieve, verify, and utilize financial information efficiently for reporting, decision-making, auditing, and accountability. The ability to retrieve financial records accurately and promptly is particularly important in modern accounting environments where organizations maintain large volumes of both physical and electronic financial information. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities may have limited opportunities to practise realistic financial record retrieval procedures, which may create gaps between theoretical knowledge and practical accounting information management skills. Financial Record Retrieval Exercises provide students with practical opportunities to locate, identify, access, verify, organize, and retrieve accounting records from simulated filing systems and digital accounting environments. Such exercises may strengthen students’ ability to manage accounting information efficiently and improve their preparedness for workplace responsibilities. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Financial Record Retrieval Exercises on students’ accounting information management skills in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical accounting competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge and practical skills improves students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional accounting responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Financial Record Retrieval Exercises may influence students’ accounting information management skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, accounting information management skills assessment scales, simulated financial filing systems, record-retrieval tasks, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, document-management exercises, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Financial Record Retrieval Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as financial-document identification, document indexing, document coding, file classification, file labelling, alphabetical filing, numerical filing, chronological filing, subject-based filing, account-based filing, transaction-based filing, customer-record filing, supplier-record filing, cash-record filing, bank-record filing, invoice filing, receipt filing, voucher filing, journal-record filing, ledger-record filing, payroll-record filing, tax-record filing, asset-record filing, expenditure-record filing, revenue-record filing, budget-record filing, financial-statement filing, audit-document filing, document referencing, file numbering, record numbering, document tracking, file-location identification, archive management, record-retention procedures, document-storage procedures, physical-record retrieval, electronic-record retrieval, database searching, accounting-software searching, spreadsheet searching, keyword searching, date searching, account-number searching, transaction-number searching, document-number searching, customer-name searching, supplier-name searching, record-filtering procedures, search refinement, document matching, record verification, source-document verification, document authenticity verification, record completeness verification, data-accuracy verification, duplicate-record identification, missing-record identification, misplaced-record identification, incomplete-record identification, unauthorized-record identification, outdated-record identification, damaged-record identification, record-retrieval timing, retrieval accuracy, retrieval efficiency, information organization, information accessibility, document confidentiality, financial-information security, access-control procedures, password protection, user authorization, digital access management, data privacy, electronic document management, cloud-based record management, digital filing, electronic indexing, digital archiving, backup procedures, record recovery, data restoration, audit-trail maintenance, version control, document updates, record modification tracking, information-sharing procedures, report preparation, information presentation, accounting decision support, practical demonstrations, guided retrieval exercises, individual assignments, group exercises, case studies, role-play activities, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging record-retrieval scenarios. Students’ accounting information management skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to identify financial documents, classify records, index documents, code records, label files, apply appropriate filing systems, organize records alphabetically, numerically, chronologically, by subject, by account, and by transaction, maintain customer and supplier records, manage cash and bank records, organize invoices, receipts, vouchers, journals, ledgers, payroll records, tax records, asset records, expenditure records, revenue records, budgets, financial statements, and audit documents, reference records appropriately, number files correctly, track documents, identify file locations, manage archives, apply retention procedures, store records appropriately, retrieve physical documents, retrieve electronic records, search accounting databases, search accounting software, search spreadsheets, use keywords effectively, search by date, search by account number, search by transaction number, search by document number, search by customer or supplier name, filter records, refine searches, match documents with accounting records, verify records, confirm source documents, verify document authenticity, confirm record completeness, verify financial data, identify duplicate records, identify missing records, identify misplaced records, identify incomplete records, identify unauthorized records, identify outdated records, identify damaged records, retrieve records promptly, retrieve records accurately, organize accounting information, ensure information accessibility, maintain confidentiality, protect financial information, apply access controls, protect passwords, follow user authorization procedures, manage digital access, observe data-privacy requirements, manage electronic documents, use digital filing systems, index electronic records, manage digital archives, perform backups, recover records, restore data, maintain audit trails, manage document versions, track record modifications, share information appropriately, prepare reports from retrieved records, present accounting information, use retrieved information to support accounting decisions, demonstrate accuracy, demonstrate attention to detail, demonstrate organizational ability, demonstrate information-management competence, demonstrate analytical ability, demonstrate problem-solving ability, demonstrate digital competence, demonstrate accounting competence, demonstrate efficiency, demonstrate confidence, demonstrate accountability, demonstrate responsibility, demonstrate professionalism, demonstrate adaptability, and overall accounting information management competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Financial Record Retrieval Exercises, practical experiences, and accounting information management skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Financial Record Retrieval Exercises on students’ accounting information management skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, accounting information management skill scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Financial Record Retrieval Exercises have a significant positive impact on students’ accounting information management skills in Nigerian universities.
