Abstract
Accurate financial transaction recording is an essential competency in Accounting Education because accounting records provide the basis for financial reporting, decision-making, internal control, auditing, and accountability. Errors in transaction recording may arise from incorrect amounts, dates, account classifications, descriptions, source documents, ledger postings, or omissions, thereby reducing the reliability of financial information. Financial Record Cross-Checking Exercises provide students with practical opportunities to compare financial records with source documents, verify transaction details, identify discrepancies, and correct recording errors. Such exercises may help bridge the gap between theoretical accounting knowledge and the practical accuracy required in accounting workplaces. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Financial Record Cross-Checking Exercises on students’ transaction accuracy in Accounting Education in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical accounting competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge and practical accounting skills enhances students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional responsibilities.
