Impact of Financial Decision-Making Competitions on Students’ Analytical Reasoning Skills in Nigerian Universities
Abstract
Financial decision-making is an important competency in accounting education because students are expected to interpret financial information, evaluate alternatives, assess risks, solve financial problems, and make logical decisions based on available evidence. However, conventional classroom instruction may provide limited opportunities for students to apply financial concepts in competitive and practical situations that require rapid analysis and reasoned judgment. Financial Decision-Making Competitions provide an interactive learning environment in which students can examine financial scenarios, analyse information, compare alternatives, solve problems, and justify decisions. Such competitions may strengthen students’ ability to apply accounting and financial knowledge to realistic situations while developing analytical reasoning skills required for academic and professional success. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Financial Decision-Making Competitions on students’ analytical reasoning skills in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Social Cognitive Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop competencies through practical experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes the active construction of knowledge through problem-solving, interpretation, interaction, and application of existing knowledge to new situations. Social Cognitive Theory explains how observation, modelling, peer interaction, feedback, reinforcement, and self-efficacy may influence students’ learning and performance. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Financial Decision-Making Competitions may influence students’ analytical reasoning skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, financial decision-making competition tasks, analytical reasoning assessment instruments, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, financial case scenarios, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Financial Decision-Making Competitions will be assessed using indicators such as financial case analysis, financial-information interpretation, identification of relevant information, identification of irrelevant information, financial-data comparison, financial-statement interpretation, ratio analysis, trend analysis, cost analysis, revenue analysis, profit analysis, cash-flow analysis, budgeting decisions, investment decisions, financing decisions, expenditure decisions, pricing decisions, savings decisions, working-capital decisions, resource-allocation decisions, risk assessment, alternative evaluation, option comparison, financial forecasting, problem identification, problem definition, evidence evaluation, assumption identification, logical reasoning, numerical reasoning, quantitative analysis, financial calculation, cost-benefit analysis, scenario analysis, decision-rule application, financial-constraint analysis, decision prioritization, time-limited decision-making, justification of decisions, presentation of solutions, defence of decisions, peer comparison, team-based analysis, competition participation, repeated problem-solving, feedback, reflection, and performance evaluation. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Financial Decision-Making Competitions on students’ analytical reasoning skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, analytical reasoning scores before and after participation in the competitions may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Financial Decision-Making Competitions have a significant positive impact on students’ analytical reasoning skills in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to structured financial decision-making competitions are expected to demonstrate improved ability to analyse financial information, identify problems, compare alternatives, evaluate evidence, and reach logical conclusions. Financial case-analysis activities may improve students’ ability to examine complex financial situations systematically. Financial-information interpretation may strengthen students’ ability to extract meaning from accounting and financial data. Relevant-information identification may improve students’ ability to focus on information necessary for making appropriate decisions. Financial-data comparison may strengthen students’ ability to evaluate differences among alternatives. Financial-statement interpretation may improve students’ understanding of financial position and performance. Ratio-analysis activities may strengthen students’ ability to evaluate financial relationships. Trend-analysis activities may improve students’ ability to identify changes and patterns in financial information. Cost and revenue analysis may strengthen students’ ability to evaluate financial implications. Profit-analysis activities may improve students’ ability to assess financial outcomes. Cash-flow analysis may strengthen students’ ability to interpret liquidity and cash movements. Budgeting decisions may improve students’ ability to evaluate planned income and expenditure. Investment decisions may strengthen students’ ability to compare investment alternatives and associated returns and risks. Financing decisions may improve students’ ability to evaluate alternative sources of finance. Expenditure decisions may strengthen students’ ability to assess the financial implications of spending choices. However, the effectiveness of Financial Decision-Making Competitions may be constrained by inadequate financial-learning resources, limited access to realistic financial case materials, large class sizes, insufficient competition time, inadequate lecturer preparation, limited access to digital financial-analysis tools, unreliable electricity and internet connectivity, insufficient institutional funding, low student participation, excessive emphasis on competition rather than learning, inadequate feedback, limited opportunities for repeated participation, and weak integration of financial decision-making activities into Accounting Education curricula. The study therefore expects realistic, structured, evidence-based, inclusive, and adequately supervised Financial Decision-Making Competitions to contribute significantly to improved analytical reasoning skills among students in Nigerian universities.
