Impact of Entrepreneurship-Based Accounting Practicals on Students’ Small-Business Financial Management Skills in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Entrepreneurship-based accounting practicals are an important component of accounting education because they provide students with opportunities to apply accounting knowledge to the financial management challenges encountered in small businesses. Accounting education students require practical competence in recording business transactions, preparing financial records, managing cash, controlling expenses, monitoring receivables and payables, preparing budgets, determining profitability, and using accounting information to support small-business decisions. However, students may possess theoretical accounting knowledge without sufficient practical experience in applying accounting principles to entrepreneurial and small-business environments. Entrepreneurship-Based Accounting Practicals expose students to realistic business activities through simulated or actual entrepreneurial ventures, case studies, business projects, accounting records, budgeting exercises, cash-flow management tasks, and financial decision-making scenarios. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of entrepreneurship-based accounting practicals on students' small-business financial management skills in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Financial Management Theory. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, reflective observation, conceptualization, and active experimentation, providing a suitable framework for students' participation in entrepreneurship-based accounting practicals. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, problem-solving, prior knowledge, and the construction of knowledge through meaningful learning experiences. Financial Management Theory emphasizes effective planning, acquisition, allocation, utilization, and control of financial resources to achieve organizational objectives, providing a suitable framework for understanding students' application of accounting information to small-business financial management. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how entrepreneurship-based accounting practicals may influence students' small-business financial management skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible accounting education students. Entrepreneurship-based accounting practicals will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to entrepreneurial accounting activities, simulated business creation, business transaction recording, source-document preparation, bookkeeping, cash management, cash-flow forecasting, budgeting, expense control, inventory recording, receivables management, payables management, pricing and cost analysis, profitability analysis, financial statement preparation, working capital management, break-even analysis, tax-record preparation, financial planning, business performance monitoring, financial record-keeping, use of accounting software, spreadsheet-based accounting activities, business case studies, entrepreneurial projects, business simulations, group projects, individual practical assignments, lecturer demonstrations, guided practice, feedback, and opportunities for repeated application. Students' small-business financial management skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to maintain accurate financial records, record business transactions, manage cash receipts and payments, prepare cash budgets, monitor cash flows, control business expenses, manage receivables and payables, maintain inventory records, calculate and interpret profitability, prepare basic financial statements, determine business costs, set appropriate prices, conduct break-even analysis, manage working capital, prepare business budgets, evaluate financial performance, identify financial problems, plan short-term financial requirements, assess financing needs, monitor business liquidity, interpret financial information, use accounting software and spreadsheets, make evidence-based financial decisions, and apply financial management principles to unfamiliar small-business situations. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized small-business financial management skills tests, practical accounting tasks, entrepreneurial business cases, simulated business projects, financial management scenarios, spreadsheet-based exercises, accounting software tasks, competency-based assessment rubrics, observation checklists, students' business records and practical work, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to entrepreneurship-based accounting practicals, entrepreneurial learning experiences, and levels of small-business financial management skills. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of entrepreneurship-based accounting practicals on students' small-business financial management skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, small-business financial management skill scores before and after exposure to entrepreneurship-based accounting practicals may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving conventional accounting instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that entrepreneurship-based accounting practicals have a significant positive impact on students' small-business financial management skills in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to structured and practical entrepreneurial accounting activities are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to maintain financial records, manage cash, control expenses, prepare budgets, monitor working capital, evaluate profitability, and make informed financial decisions than students taught primarily through conventional theoretical approaches. Simulated business projects may help students understand how accounting information is generated and used in actual entrepreneurial environments. Cash management exercises may strengthen students' ability to monitor receipts and payments and maintain adequate liquidity, while budgeting activities may improve their ability to plan future income and expenditure. Receivables and payables exercises may enhance students' understanding of credit management and its implications for business cash flow. Profitability and break-even exercises may strengthen students' ability to determine business costs, assess profit margins, set prices, and evaluate financial sustainability. Working capital exercises may improve students' ability to manage short-term resources and obligations. Practical use of accounting software and spreadsheets may further enhance students' ability to maintain organized financial records, process transactions, analyse financial information, and prepare reports efficiently. However, inadequate access to entrepreneurial learning resources, limited computer and accounting software facilities, insufficient instructional time, large class sizes, inadequate lecturer training, limited exposure to real business environments, and students' varying levels of entrepreneurial and digital skills may reduce the effectiveness of entrepreneurship-based accounting practicals. The study therefore expects practical, realistic, technology-supported, and well-supervised entrepreneurship-based accounting practicals to contribute significantly to improved small-business financial management skills among accounting education students in Nigerian universities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on entrepreneurship-based accounting practicals, small-business financial management skills, accounting education, entrepreneurship education, entrepreneurial accounting, financial management education, experiential learning, constructivist learning, financial management theory, practical accounting skills, small-business management, financial decision-making, accounting pedagogy, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, accounting education departments, accounting educators, entrepreneurship development centres, professional accounting bodies, curriculum developers, small-business organizations, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening practical accounting and entrepreneurship education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating entrepreneurship-based accounting practicals into accounting education programmes, developing realistic small-business accounting cases and simulations, strengthening students' financial record-keeping and cash management skills, incorporating budgeting, working capital, profitability, and financial planning activities into practical instruction, improving access to accounting software and spreadsheet tools, providing opportunities for students to manage simulated or small-scale business ventures, developing competency-based small-business financial management assessments, and aligning accounting education with the practical financial management competencies required by entrepreneurs and small businesses in Nigeria.
