Impact of Electronic Banking Transaction Exercises on Students’ Digital Banking Accounting Skills in Nigerian Polytechnics

 

Abstract

Digital banking accounting skills are increasingly important for Accounting Education students as accounting and financial transactions become more dependent on electronic payment platforms, internet banking, mobile banking, electronic funds transfers, point-of-sale systems, automated payment channels, and digital financial records. Accounting personnel are expected to understand how electronic transactions are initiated, documented, verified, recorded, monitored, and reconciled within accounting systems. However, students in Nigerian polytechnics may have limited opportunities to practise electronic banking transactions in realistic learning environments, which may create a gap between theoretical accounting knowledge and practical digital banking requirements. Electronic Banking Transaction Exercises provide students with opportunities to simulate electronic payment and banking activities while applying accounting principles to technology-supported financial transactions. Such practical exercises may strengthen students’ ability to process, document, record, verify, and reconcile electronic banking transactions. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Electronic Banking Transaction Exercises on students’ digital banking accounting skills in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Technology Acceptance Model. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. The Technology Acceptance Model explains how perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use may influence students’ acceptance and effective utilization of electronic banking technologies for accounting activities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Electronic Banking Transaction Exercises may influence students’ digital banking accounting skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, digital banking accounting skills assessment scales, simulated electronic banking transaction tasks, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, electronic transaction records, accounting exercises, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, digital banking accounting skill scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Electronic Banking Transaction Exercises have a significant positive impact on students’ digital banking accounting skills in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to structured electronic banking exercises are expected to demonstrate improved ability to process, document, record, verify, analyze, monitor, and reconcile technology-supported banking transactions. Electronic funds-transfer exercises may improve students’ understanding of digital movement of funds. Internet- and mobile-banking exercises may strengthen students’ ability to navigate electronic transaction processes. Point-of-sale activities may improve students’ understanding of electronic payment documentation. Automated teller machine exercises may strengthen students’ awareness of electronic withdrawal and account-service procedures. Electronic deposit and withdrawal exercises may improve students’ ability to classify and record digital transactions.
