Impact of Cash-Flow Forecasting Exercises on Students’ Cash Management Skills in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Cash-flow forecasting is an important component of accounting education because it equips students with the knowledge and practical skills required to estimate future cash receipts and payments, identify potential cash shortages and surpluses, and support effective cash management decisions. Accounting education students need to understand how historical financial information, expected revenues, operating expenses, credit transactions, capital expenditure, financing activities, and other cash-flow factors influence an organization's future liquidity position. However, students may experience difficulties developing cash management skills when instruction focuses mainly on theoretical concepts without sufficient opportunities to prepare and interpret realistic cash-flow forecasts. Cash-Flow Forecasting Exercises provide students with practical opportunities to prepare cash budgets, estimate future cash inflows and outflows, identify liquidity gaps, analyse timing differences, evaluate alternative financing and investment decisions, and develop appropriate cash management strategies. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of cash-flow forecasting exercises on students' cash management skills in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Cash Management Theory. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, reflective observation, conceptualization, and active experimentation, providing a suitable framework for students' participation in practical cash-flow forecasting exercises. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, prior knowledge, problem-solving, and the construction of knowledge through meaningful learning experiences. Cash Management Theory emphasizes the effective planning, monitoring, and control of cash inflows and outflows to maintain adequate liquidity while minimizing idle cash and financing costs, providing a suitable framework for understanding students' application of cash-flow forecasting to cash management decisions. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how cash-flow forecasting exercises may influence students' cash management skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible accounting education students. Cash-flow forecasting exercises will be assessed using indicators such as preparation of cash budgets, estimation of cash receipts, estimation of cash payments, sales collection forecasts, purchases payment forecasts, operating expense forecasts, capital expenditure forecasts, financing cash flows, timing of cash transactions, credit sales and collection patterns, credit purchases and payment schedules, opening and closing cash balances, minimum cash requirements, identification of cash surpluses and deficits, cash-flow projections, scenario analysis, sensitivity analysis, short-term financing decisions, investment of temporary cash surpluses, working-capital projections, realistic cash-flow cases, cash management simulations, spreadsheet-based forecasting, group problem-solving, individual exercises, lecturer demonstrations, guided practice, feedback, and opportunities for repeated application. Students' cash management skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to prepare cash budgets accurately, forecast cash inflows and outflows, monitor cash balances, identify potential cash shortages, identify temporary cash surpluses, determine appropriate minimum cash balances, plan the timing of receipts and payments, evaluate short-term borrowing requirements, assess temporary investment opportunities, manage working-capital cash flows, control unnecessary cash outflows, interpret cash-flow forecasts, evaluate alternative cash management strategies, respond to unexpected changes in cash flows, analyse liquidity positions, recommend corrective actions, use spreadsheet tools for cash monitoring, and apply cash management principles to unfamiliar business situations. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized cash management skills tests, practical cash-flow forecasting tasks, cash budget case studies, financial scenarios, cash management simulations, spreadsheet-based exercises, competency-based assessment rubrics, observation checklists, students' practical work, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to cash-flow forecasting exercises, practical financial management experiences, and levels of cash management skills. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of cash-flow forecasting exercises on students' cash management skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, cash management skill scores before and after exposure to cash-flow forecasting exercises may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving conventional budgeting or financial management instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that cash-flow forecasting exercises have a significant positive impact on students' cash management skills in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to structured and practical cash-flow forecasting exercises are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to forecast cash receipts and payments, monitor cash balances, identify liquidity problems, plan financing requirements, manage temporary cash surpluses, and make appropriate cash management decisions than students taught primarily through conventional theoretical approaches. Practical cash budgeting exercises may help students understand the timing of cash inflows and outflows and the importance of maintaining adequate liquidity. Exercises involving credit sales and purchases may strengthen students' ability to recognize the difference between revenue or expense recognition and the actual timing of cash movements. Cash-shortage scenarios may improve students' ability to identify financing needs and evaluate short-term borrowing alternatives, while cash-surplus scenarios may strengthen their ability to consider appropriate temporary investment decisions. Sensitivity and scenario analysis may further improve students' ability to respond to changes in sales collections, operating expenses, capital expenditure, and other cash-flow assumptions. Spreadsheet-based forecasting exercises may improve students' ability to organize financial information, automate cash-flow calculations, monitor projected balances, and evaluate alternative cash management strategies efficiently. However, inadequate access to computers and spreadsheet applications, limited exposure to realistic financial data, large class sizes, insufficient instructional time, inadequate lecturer training, and students' difficulty interpreting complex cash-flow patterns may reduce the effectiveness of cash-flow forecasting exercises. The study therefore expects practical, realistic, technology-supported, and well-supervised cash-flow forecasting exercises to contribute significantly to improved cash management skills among accounting education students in Nigerian universities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on cash-flow forecasting exercises, cash management skills, accounting education, financial management education, cash budgeting, liquidity management, experiential learning, constructivist learning, cash management theory, practical accounting skills, financial decision-making, accounting pedagogy, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, curriculum developers, financial institutions, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening practical financial management education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating cash-flow forecasting exercises into accounting education programmes, developing realistic cash budgeting cases and cash management simulations, strengthening students' ability to forecast and monitor cash flows, incorporating spreadsheet and computerized forecasting tools into instruction, increasing exposure to liquidity and working-capital management scenarios, providing continuous guided practice and feedback, training accounting educators in practical cash-flow forecasting methods, developing competency-based cash management assessments, and aligning accounting education with the practical financial management competencies required in contemporary accounting and business environments in Nigeria.
