Impact of Cash Collection Exercises on Students’ Receivables Management Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Receivables management is an important practical accounting competency that enables organizations to monitor amounts owed by customers, document credit transactions, track collections, maintain accurate customer accounts, and reduce delays in recovering outstanding debts. Accounting personnel are expected to understand the procedures involved in receiving customer payments, issuing receipts, updating receivables records, allocating collections to appropriate customer accounts, identifying outstanding balances, and reconciling collection records with accounting records. However, Accounting Education students in Nigeria may have limited opportunities to practise realistic cash collection procedures, which may create a gap between theoretical knowledge and practical receivables management competence. Cash Collection Exercises provide students with practical opportunities to simulate customer payment processing, receipt preparation, account updating, collection monitoring, and reconciliation using realistic business transactions. Such exercises may strengthen students’ ability to manage receivables accurately and develop practical skills required in accounting workplaces. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Cash Collection Exercises on students’ receivables management skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical accounting competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant accounting knowledge and practical skills enhances students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Cash Collection Exercises may influence students’ receivables management skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities and polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select institutions, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, receivables management skills assessment scales, simulated customer accounts, cash collection records, receipts, payment documents, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, collection-processing exercises, reconciliation tasks, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Cash Collection Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as customer payment identification, cash collection procedures, payment receipt preparation, receipt numbering, transaction-date recording, customer identification, customer-account identification, invoice identification, outstanding-invoice identification, payment-amount verification, payment-method identification, cash-payment documentation, cheque-payment documentation, electronic-payment documentation, bank-transfer documentation, point-of-sale payment documentation, payment authorization, customer-account verification, payer verification, payment confirmation, receipt issuance, receipt verification, collection documentation, collection register preparation, cash-receipt recording, customer-account updating, accounts-receivable ledger updating, subsidiary-ledger updating, general-ledger updating, cash-book updating, bank-account updating, payment allocation, invoice matching, payment-to-invoice matching, partial-payment allocation, full-payment allocation, advance-payment recognition, overpayment identification, underpayment identification, unidentified-payment identification, unapplied-cash identification, customer-balance calculation, outstanding-balance calculation, ageing analysis, overdue-account identification, collection monitoring, follow-up procedures, customer-payment follow-up, reminder documentation, collection correspondence, payment-plan documentation, credit-control procedures, collection authorization, collection approval, supporting-document verification, payment-evidence verification, customer-statement preparation, customer-statement verification, account-statement reconciliation, cash-collection reconciliation, bank reconciliation, receivables reconciliation, customer-account reconciliation, invoice reconciliation, discrepancy identification, collection-error identification, recording-error identification, duplicate-payment identification, missing-payment identification, unauthorized-payment identification, incorrect-amount identification, incorrect-account identification, incorrect-customer identification, incorrect-invoice identification, reversed-payment identification, failed-payment identification, bounced-cheque identification, bank-charge identification, collection-charge identification, bad-debt identification, doubtful-debt identification, allowance-for-doubtful-accounts activities, write-off procedures, debt-recovery documentation, internal-control procedures, segregation of duties, authorization controls, receipt controls, cash-handling controls, custody procedures, collection monitoring, fraud-risk identification, cash-leakage identification, skimming-risk awareness, fictitious-receipt awareness, altered-receipt identification, duplicate-receipt detection, receipt-sequence monitoring, document filing, receipt filing, payment-document filing, customer-record filing, document indexing, document retrieval, transaction tracking, audit-trail maintenance, financial-reporting activities, collection-report preparation, daily-collection reporting, weekly-collection reporting, monthly-collection reporting, receivables-ageing reporting, collection-performance reporting, collection-variance analysis, cash-flow monitoring, accounting-software activities, spreadsheet activities, digital receipts, electronic collection records, digital customer accounts, electronic payment verification, digital account reconciliation, electronic statements, digital document management, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group exercises, case studies, role-play activities, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging cash-collection scenarios. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Cash Collection Exercises, practical experiences, and receivables management skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Cash Collection Exercises on students’ receivables management skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, receivables management skill scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Cash Collection Exercises have a significant positive impact on students’ receivables management skills in Nigeria.
