Impact of Business Correspondence Exercises on Professional Writing Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Professional writing skills are essential competencies for Accounting Education students because accounting professionals are required to communicate financial, administrative, and business information clearly, accurately, and appropriately through written communication. Effective professional writing is important in preparing business letters, emails, memoranda, reports, notices, financial correspondence, client communications, and other workplace documents. However, some Accounting Education students in Nigeria may have limited opportunities to practise authentic business correspondence during their academic training, which may result in weaknesses in organization, clarity, accuracy, tone, formatting, and professional expression. Business Correspondence Exercises provide students with practical opportunities to prepare and evaluate different forms of workplace communication in realistic accounting and business situations. Through repeated writing and feedback, students may develop the ability to communicate information effectively and appropriately in professional settings. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Business Correspondence Exercises on professional writing skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical writing competencies through concrete writing experiences, reflection, revision, and active application. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant communication competencies can enhance students' productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional employment. Collectively, these theories provide a suitable framework for explaining how Business Correspondence Exercises may influence professional writing skills among Accounting Education students. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected universities and polytechnics across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select institutions, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, professional-writing skills assessment scales, business-correspondence writing tasks, writing-performance rubrics, document-analysis exercises, editing and proofreading tasks, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Business Correspondence Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as business-letter writing, formal-letter writing, application-letter writing, enquiry-letter writing, response-letter writing, complaint-letter writing, adjustment-letter writing, acknowledgement-letter writing, invitation-letter writing, recommendation-letter writing, appreciation-letter writing, apology-letter writing, memorandum writing, business-email writing, professional-email writing, internal-office correspondence, external-office correspondence, client correspondence, customer correspondence, supplier correspondence, employer correspondence, employee correspondence, financial correspondence, accounting correspondence, audit correspondence, taxation correspondence, banking correspondence, invoice correspondence, payment correspondence, billing correspondence, collection correspondence, credit correspondence, payroll correspondence, procurement correspondence, administrative correspondence, report writing, financial-report writing, accounting-report writing, business-report writing, progress-report writing, meeting-report writing, incident-report writing, analytical-report writing, executive-summary writing, notice writing, circular writing, announcement writing, minutes writing, agenda writing, proposal writing, business-case writing, professional profile writing, cover-letter writing, CV-supporting statements, email subject-line writing, email opening and closing, professional greetings, professional salutations, appropriate sign-offs, paragraph organization, sentence construction, logical sequencing, information organization, coherence, cohesion, conciseness, clarity, accuracy, relevance, completeness, appropriate tone, professional vocabulary, business terminology, accounting terminology, financial terminology, audience awareness, purpose awareness, context awareness, formal-language use, appropriate register, active voice, passive voice where appropriate, appropriate verb use, tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, pronoun use, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, grammar, sentence boundaries, paragraph development, transition use, proofreading, editing, revision, document formatting, heading selection, subheading use, spacing, alignment, indentation, page layout, document structure, professional presentation, consistency, readability, document referencing, attachment referencing, table presentation, numerical information presentation, financial-information presentation, data presentation, quotation presentation, citation practices, confidentiality, professional etiquette, digital correspondence, email etiquette, electronic document preparation, online correspondence, workplace communication scenarios, client-service correspondence, complaint-response correspondence, enquiry-response correspondence, payment-reminder correspondence, appointment correspondence, meeting correspondence, recruitment correspondence, employment correspondence, supplier communication, customer communication, management communication, staff communication, professional editing, peer review, lecturer feedback, self-assessment, repeated writing practice, simulated workplace correspondence, accounting-office correspondence, and opportunities to revise written communication based on structured feedback. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Business Correspondence Exercises, writing experiences, and levels of professional writing competence. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Business Correspondence Exercises on professional writing skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, professional-writing scores before and after participation in Business Correspondence Exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Business Correspondence Exercises have a significant positive impact on professional writing skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured business-correspondence exercises are expected to demonstrate improved ability to prepare clear, accurate, concise, well-organized, and professionally formatted workplace documents. Business-letter activities may improve students' ability to communicate with clients, suppliers, employers, customers, and other stakeholders. Email-writing exercises may strengthen students' ability to communicate professionally through electronic platforms, including the use of appropriate subject lines, greetings, tone, structure, attachments, and sign-offs. Memorandum-writing activities may improve students' ability to communicate internal organizational information efficiently. Report-writing exercises may strengthen students' ability to organize, analyse, and communicate accounting and business information. Financial-report and accounting-report exercises may improve students' ability to present financial information accurately and professionally. Client and customer correspondence activities may strengthen students' ability to respond appropriately to enquiries, complaints, requests, and service-related issues. Payment, billing, collection, payroll, procurement, and credit correspondence exercises may expose students to practical accounting-office communication. Complaint-response and enquiry-response exercises may improve students' ability to communicate professionally in challenging situations. Meeting correspondence activities may improve students' ability to prepare agendas, minutes, notices, invitations, and follow-up communications. Proposal and business-case writing may strengthen students' ability to communicate recommendations and business ideas. Professional vocabulary and accounting terminology activities may improve students' ability to use appropriate workplace language. Audience-awareness exercises may help students adapt their writing to different recipients. Purpose-awareness activities may improve students' ability to select appropriate content and writing styles. Tone and register exercises may strengthen students' ability to distinguish formal, professional, persuasive, informative, and responsive communication. Grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and sentence-construction exercises may improve linguistic accuracy. Paragraph-development activities may strengthen coherence, cohesion, and logical sequencing. Conciseness exercises may help students communicate information without unnecessary repetition. Editing and proofreading activities may improve students' ability to identify and correct writing errors. Revision exercises may encourage students to improve weak drafts based on feedback. Document-formatting activities may improve the professional appearance and readability of written communication. Digital-correspondence exercises may prepare students for contemporary workplace communication through email and electronic documents. Simulated workplace correspondence may enable students to practise writing in realistic accounting and business situations. Repeated writing practice may improve students' confidence and independence. Peer review may expose students to alternative approaches to professional writing. Lecturer feedback may help students identify specific weaknesses and improve subsequent writing. Self-assessment may encourage students to evaluate their own writing and identify areas for improvement. However, the effectiveness of Business Correspondence Exercises may be constrained by inadequate writing resources, limited access to computers and digital tools, poor internet connectivity, unreliable electricity supply, large class sizes, limited time for individualized writing practice, inadequate lecturer feedback, students' weak language foundations, limited exposure to authentic workplace documents, insufficient industry interaction, outdated correspondence practices, low student participation, inadequate writing assessment, limited opportunities for revision, and weak integration of practical business writing into Accounting Education curricula. The study therefore expects practical, structured, authentic, feedback-oriented, technology-supported, and adequately supervised Business Correspondence Exercises to contribute significantly to improved professional writing skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Business Correspondence Exercises, professional writing skills, Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, Human Capital Theory, accounting education, business communication, professional communication, workplace writing, employability skills, graduate employability, workplace readiness, career readiness, business-letter writing, email writing, memorandum writing, report writing, financial writing, accounting correspondence, client communication, customer communication, supplier communication, employer communication, internal communication, external communication, professional vocabulary, accounting terminology, financial terminology, audience awareness, purpose awareness, writing tone, writing register, grammar, spelling, punctuation, proofreading, editing, revision, document formatting, digital correspondence, email etiquette, workplace communication, professional writing competence, Accounting Education students, Nigerian universities, Nigerian polytechnics, and accounting education in Nigeria.
