Impact of Banking Complaint-Handling Education on Students’ Knowledge of Financial Dispute Resolution in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Financial disputes are an important aspect of banking operations because customers may encounter problems involving unauthorized transactions, failed electronic transfers, incorrect charges, delayed payments, account restrictions, transaction reversals, service interruptions, and other banking-related issues. Accounting Education students require adequate knowledge of financial dispute resolution procedures because future accounting and financial professionals may interact with banks, customers, financial institutions, and regulatory bodies in resolving transaction-related complaints. However, students in Nigerian polytechnics may have limited exposure to practical banking complaint-handling procedures and formal mechanisms for resolving financial disputes. Banking Complaint-Handling Education provides students with structured knowledge of how banking complaints are identified, documented, reported, investigated, escalated, followed up, and resolved through appropriate institutional and regulatory channels. Such education may improve students' understanding of customers' rights, complaint procedures, dispute-resolution mechanisms, documentation requirements, and appropriate channels for seeking redress. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Banking Complaint-Handling Education on students' knowledge of financial dispute resolution in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical knowledge through concrete experiences, reflection, conceptual understanding, and active application. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge and skills improves students' productivity, employability, professional competence, and preparedness for workplace responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Banking Complaint-Handling Education may influence students' knowledge of financial dispute resolution. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, financial dispute-resolution knowledge assessment scales, banking complaint scenarios, case-based questions, practical complaint-handling exercises, observation checklists, assessment rubrics, and pre-test and post-test instruments. Banking Complaint-Handling Education will be assessed using indicators such as awareness of banking complaints, identification of financial disputes, types of banking complaints, customer complaint rights, complaint-handling procedures, complaint registration, complaint documentation, complaint classification, complaint acknowledgement, complaint reference numbers, supporting-document requirements, transaction evidence, account statements, receipts, payment confirmations, electronic transaction records, complaint forms, written complaints, verbal complaints, digital complaints, complaint channels, branch complaint desks, customer-service channels, telephone complaint channels, email complaints, mobile-banking complaint channels, internet-banking complaint channels, bank websites, social-media complaint channels, official complaint portals, complaint escalation procedures, supervisory review, customer-service escalation, internal dispute-resolution mechanisms, bank complaint units, compliance departments, consumer-protection units, regulatory complaint channels, alternative dispute-resolution mechanisms, mediation, negotiation, conciliation, arbitration awareness, regulatory intervention, financial ombudsman awareness where applicable, Central Bank of Nigeria complaint procedures, consumer-protection principles, customer rights, confidentiality, data privacy, complaint investigation, transaction verification, identity verification, account verification, transaction-history review, bank-record examination, electronic-payment investigation, failed-transaction investigation, unauthorized-transaction investigation, disputed-charge investigation, incorrect-debit investigation, incorrect-credit investigation, duplicate-transaction investigation, reversed-transaction investigation, delayed-transfer investigation, account-restriction complaints, service-quality complaints, bank-charge complaints, card-related complaints, automated teller machine complaints, point-of-sale complaints, mobile-banking complaints, internet-banking complaints, electronic-funds-transfer complaints, loan-related complaints, account-opening complaints, account-closure complaints, account-maintenance complaints, foreign-exchange transaction complaints, remittance complaints, cash-withdrawal complaints, deposit complaints, cheque-related complaints, direct-debit complaints, standing-order complaints, payment-failure complaints, transaction-delay complaints, complaint prioritization, complaint severity assessment, evidence collection, evidence preservation, complaint investigation steps, communication procedures, customer interviewing, active listening, questioning techniques, explanation of procedures, complaint acknowledgement, response timelines, resolution communication, customer notification, follow-up procedures, unresolved-complaint monitoring, complaint escalation, complaint closure, resolution documentation, record retention, audit trails, complaint databases, complaint registers, complaint tracking, complaint reporting, dispute-resolution outcomes, customer compensation awareness, reversal procedures, refund procedures, correction procedures, charge adjustment, account correction, service restoration, error correction, fraud-related escalation, suspicious-transaction reporting, cybersecurity-related complaints, phishing-related complaints, identity-theft complaints, financial-information protection, digital-security awareness, professional ethics, customer confidentiality, fair treatment, non-discrimination, transparency, accountability, professionalism, communication skills, conflict management, problem-solving, decision-making, practical demonstrations, guided learning, individual assignments, group activities, case studies, role-play exercises, simulated banking complaints, scenario analysis, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, feedback activities, self-assessment, reflective practice, and progressively challenging dispute-resolution scenarios. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Banking Complaint-Handling Education, sources of banking information, and levels of financial dispute-resolution knowledge. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Banking Complaint-Handling Education on students' knowledge of financial dispute resolution. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, knowledge scores before and after participation in the educational programme may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Banking Complaint-Handling Education has a significant positive impact on students' knowledge of financial dispute resolution in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to structured and practical banking complaint-handling education are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of how financial disputes are identified, documented, investigated, escalated, resolved, and followed up. Awareness activities may improve students' ability to recognize different types of banking complaints and distinguish routine service issues from financial disputes requiring formal resolution. Customer-rights education may strengthen students' understanding of customers' entitlements and responsibilities. Complaint-registration exercises may improve students' knowledge of how complaints are formally reported. Documentation activities may strengthen students' understanding of the information and evidence required to support a financial complaint. Complaint-classification exercises may improve students' ability to categorize disputes according to their nature and severity. Complaint-acknowledgement activities may strengthen students' understanding of how institutions confirm receipt of complaints. Supporting-document exercises may improve students' ability to identify relevant receipts, account statements, transaction records, payment confirmations, and other evidence. Complaint-channel education may strengthen students' knowledge of appropriate branch, telephone, email, mobile-banking, internet-banking, and official digital channels. Escalation activities may improve students' understanding of when and how unresolved complaints should be referred to supervisory or specialized units. Internal dispute-resolution education may strengthen students' knowledge of bank complaint units, compliance departments, and consumer-protection functions. Regulatory complaint education may improve students' awareness of appropriate external channels for seeking redress when internal mechanisms do not resolve disputes. Alternative dispute-resolution education may strengthen students' understanding of negotiation, mediation, conciliation, and arbitration as mechanisms for resolving financial disputes. Consumer-protection education may improve students' ability to recognize the importance of fairness, transparency, confidentiality, and accountability in complaint handling. Investigation exercises may strengthen students' ability to examine transaction histories, account records, electronic payment evidence, and other relevant information. Identity- and account-verification activities may improve students' understanding of procedures for confirming legitimate complaints. Scenario-based investigation exercises may strengthen students' ability to analyze unauthorized transactions, failed transfers, disputed charges, incorrect debits, duplicate transactions, reversed transactions, delayed payments, and other financial disputes. Evidence-collection and preservation activities may strengthen students' understanding of maintaining reliable information during dispute investigation. Customer-communication exercises may improve students' ability to listen actively, ask appropriate questions, explain procedures, acknowledge complaints, communicate response timelines, and provide clear resolution information. Follow-up activities may strengthen students' ability to monitor unresolved disputes. Escalation exercises may improve students' ability to identify complaints requiring further investigation or external intervention. Resolution-documentation activities may strengthen students' understanding of maintaining records of actions taken and outcomes achieved. Complaint-register and tracking exercises may improve students' ability to monitor dispute cases and maintain accountability. Audit-trail activities may strengthen students' understanding of traceability in complaint resolution. Compensation, reversal, refund, charge-adjustment, and account-correction activities may improve students' understanding of possible outcomes of legitimate financial disputes. Fraud-related complaint education may strengthen students' awareness of appropriate escalation and reporting procedures. Cybersecurity and phishing-related complaint activities may improve students' ability to recognize digital financial risks. Identity-theft awareness may strengthen students' understanding of protecting customer information. Professional ethics education may improve students' understanding of confidentiality, fairness, transparency, accountability, and responsible handling of customer complaints. Practical demonstrations may provide students with clear models of appropriate complaint-handling procedures. Guided exercises may provide structured support during the development of dispute-resolution knowledge. Individual assignments may strengthen independent understanding of banking complaint procedures. Group activities may improve collaborative analysis of financial-dispute scenarios. Case studies may expose students to realistic banking complaints and resolution processes. Role-play exercises may simulate interactions between customers, bank personnel, and other stakeholders. Repeated practice may improve students' confidence, accuracy, judgement, and ability to select appropriate dispute-resolution procedures. Lecturer feedback may help students correct misunderstandings. Peer assessment may expose students to alternative approaches to complaint analysis. Self-assessment may encourage students to evaluate their understanding of financial dispute resolution. Reflective practice may help students learn from errors in complaint classification, documentation, investigation, escalation, and resolution. Progressively challenging scenarios may prepare students for increasingly complex financial-dispute situations. However, the effectiveness of Banking Complaint-Handling Education may be constrained by limited access to realistic banking complaint cases, inadequate banking simulation facilities, insufficient practical training periods, limited exposure to authentic banking documents, large class sizes, inadequate lecturer training, outdated instructional materials, weak collaboration between polytechnics and banking institutions, limited access to current banking complaint procedures, insufficient digital-learning resources, inadequate feedback, low student participation, and weak integration of banking complaint-handling education into Accounting Education curricula. The study therefore expects realistic, structured, practical, current, technology-supported, and adequately supervised Banking Complaint-Handling Education to contribute significantly to improved knowledge of financial dispute resolution among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Banking Complaint-Handling Education, financial dispute-resolution knowledge, banking complaints, customer protection, consumer financial rights, banking operations, financial services, dispute resolution, alternative dispute resolution, customer service, financial documentation, transaction verification, electronic banking disputes, digital banking, electronic payment complaints, fraud awareness, cybersecurity awareness, financial information protection, professional ethics, Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, Human Capital Theory, accounting education, practical accounting education, workplace readiness, employability skills, professional competence, Accounting Education students, Nigerian polytechnics, and Accounting Education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Board for Technical Education, polytechnic administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, banking institutions, financial-technology organizations, professional accounting bodies, consumer-protection stakeholders, regulatory institutions, employers, industry partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students' knowledge of financial dispute resolution. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Banking Complaint-Handling Education into Accounting Education programmes, providing realistic banking complaint scenarios and documentation, strengthening students' knowledge of customer rights and complaint procedures, incorporating financial-dispute case studies and role-play activities, improving students' understanding of internal and external dispute-resolution mechanisms, strengthening digital banking complaint knowledge, providing current banking information and structured feedback, expanding collaboration between polytechnics and banking institutions, and aligning Accounting Education programmes with contemporary banking operations, customer-protection requirements, and financial dispute-resolution practices in Nigeria.
