Impact of Audit Planning Exercises on Students’ Audit Planning Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Audit planning is an essential component of professional auditing because it provides a systematic basis for understanding an entity, identifying potential risks, determining audit objectives, allocating audit resources, and designing appropriate audit procedures. Accounting Education students require practical audit planning skills to effectively translate theoretical auditing knowledge into realistic professional tasks. However, students in Nigerian polytechnics may have limited opportunities to engage in practical audit planning activities, which may create a gap between classroom instruction and the skills required in contemporary auditing practice. Audit Planning Exercises provide students with opportunities to work with simulated organizational information, assess audit risks, establish audit objectives, develop audit strategies, prepare audit programmes, allocate audit resources, and determine appropriate audit procedures. Such practical exercises may strengthen students’ analytical, professional, and decision-making abilities in auditing. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Audit Planning Exercises on students’ audit planning skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical auditing competencies through concrete experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge and practical professional skills improves students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for the workplace. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Audit Planning Exercises may influence students’ audit planning skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, audit planning skills assessment scales, simulated audit cases, audit planning tasks, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, audit planning documents, and pre-test and post-test assessments.
