Impact of Accounting Transaction Authorization Exercises on Students’ Internal Control Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Effective internal control is essential to the proper management of financial transactions because it helps organizations prevent unauthorized activities, reduce errors, safeguard assets, maintain reliable accounting records, and promote accountability. Accounting Education students require practical knowledge of authorization procedures to understand how financial transactions are reviewed, approved, documented, and controlled before they are recorded or processed. However, students may have limited opportunities to practise transaction authorization procedures using realistic accounting situations, resulting in gaps between theoretical knowledge and practical internal control competence. Accounting Transaction Authorization Exercises provide students with opportunities to examine transaction documents, determine authorization requirements, verify approvals, identify unauthorized transactions, and apply appropriate internal control procedures. These practical activities may strengthen students’ ability to evaluate and control accounting transactions accurately. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Accounting Transaction Authorization Exercises on internal control skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Agency Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Agency Theory explains the importance of monitoring, authorization, accountability, and control mechanisms in reducing information asymmetry and protecting organizational resources from inappropriate actions by agents. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Accounting Transaction Authorization Exercises may influence students’ internal control skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities and polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select institutions, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, internal control skills assessment scales, simulated accounting transaction documents, authorization forms, payment vouchers, purchase documents, payroll records, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, case scenarios, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Accounting Transaction Authorization Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as transaction identification, source-document examination, transaction verification, authorization requirement identification, approval-level identification, authorized-person identification, signature verification, approval verification, transaction-limit verification, expenditure authorization, payment authorization, purchase authorization, payroll authorization, procurement authorization, cash-disbursement authorization, bank-payment authorization, electronic-payment authorization, journal-entry authorization, credit authorization, sales authorization, refund authorization, expense authorization, asset-purchase authorization, authorization documentation, approval documentation, supporting-document verification, invoice verification, receipt verification, purchase-order verification, payment-voucher verification, payroll-voucher verification, quotation verification, contract-document verification, budget authorization, budget-limit verification, expenditure-policy compliance, financial-policy compliance, segregation of duties, authorization and custody separation, authorization and recording separation, authorization and review separation, maker-checker procedures, supervisory review, management approval, departmental approval, financial approval, delegated authority, approval hierarchy, authorization limits, transaction thresholds, exception approval, emergency authorization, retrospective approval, approval-date verification, approval-sequence verification, approval-completeness verification, authorization-code verification, electronic approval verification, digital authorization, password-protected approval, electronic signature verification, audit-trail verification, transaction traceability, unauthorized-transaction identification, incomplete-approval identification, missing-signature identification, invalid-signature identification, altered-approval identification, duplicate-approval identification, expired-authorization identification, excessive-authorization identification, approval-bypass identification, policy-violation identification, fraudulent-authorization awareness, conflict-of-interest awareness, related-party transaction awareness, fictitious-transaction awareness, suspicious-transaction identification, error identification, error correction, control weakness identification, control deficiency reporting, exception reporting, escalation procedures, transaction rejection, transaction suspension, transaction referral, follow-up procedures, documentation retention, authorization-record filing, approval-record indexing, document retrieval, audit evidence preservation, internal-control reporting, control testing, compliance monitoring, authorization monitoring, expenditure monitoring, transaction monitoring, accounting-software authorization controls, spreadsheet-based authorization records, digital workflow controls, electronic approval systems, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group exercises, case studies, role-play activities, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging authorization scenarios. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Accounting Transaction Authorization Exercises, practical experiences, and internal control skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Accounting Transaction Authorization Exercises on students’ internal control skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, internal control skill scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Accounting Transaction Authorization Exercises have a significant positive impact on students’ internal control skills in Nigeria.
