Impact of Accountancy Career Information on the Career Choice of Accounting Education Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Accountancy career information is an important source of guidance for students because it provides knowledge about career opportunities, professional roles, qualification requirements, work environments, and advancement pathways within the accounting profession. Career choice refers to the decision students make concerning the occupation or professional pathway they intend to pursue after completing their education. Accounting Education students need accurate and relevant career information to make informed decisions about their future professional direction. However, inadequate access to information about accountancy careers may make it difficult for some students to identify suitable career pathways. This study therefore examines the impact of accountancy career information on the career choice of Accounting Education students in Nigeria. Accountancy career information involves knowledge about the various career opportunities available within the accounting profession, including roles in public practice, corporate organizations, government institutions, education, auditing, taxation, financial management, and related areas. It may also include information about professional qualifications, required competencies, employment opportunities, career progression, and workplace expectations. Students can obtain such information through career counselling, professional seminars, lecturers, practicing accountants, professional organizations, career fairs, educational materials, and digital resources. Access to adequate and reliable career information can help students develop a clearer understanding of the available options within accountancy. Career choice refers to students’ decisions regarding the accounting-related occupation or professional pathway they intend to pursue. It involves identifying preferred career areas, considering personal and professional interests, understanding qualification requirements, and selecting a career direction based on available information. Accountancy career information can influence career choice by exposing students to different professional possibilities and helping them understand the requirements and opportunities associated with each pathway. Students with adequate career information are expected to make more informed choices concerning their future accounting careers. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Data will be collected using a structured accountancy career information questionnaire and a career choice assessment designed to measure students’ access to career-related information and their preferred accounting career pathways respectively. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique at a 0.05 level of significance to determine the impact of accountancy career information on students’ career choice. The study is expected to establish that accountancy career information has a significant positive impact on the career choice of Accounting Education students. Students with greater access to relevant accountancy career information are expected to demonstrate clearer understanding of available career pathways, professional requirements, employment opportunities, and career progression options. The study may also reveal areas where insufficient or inadequate career information limits students’ ability to make informed accountancy career choices. The expected findings will have important implications for the teaching and learning of Accounting Education. Lecturers and career guidance personnel may need to provide students with regular and reliable information about different accountancy career pathways. Career fairs, professional seminars, guest lectures, career counselling sessions, workplace interactions, and career-focused classroom activities can expose students to practical information about the accounting profession. Providing career information during students’ academic programmes may help them make better-informed career decisions. The study will be beneficial to Accounting Education students, lecturers, career counsellors, tertiary institutions, professional accounting bodies, curriculum developers, and employers of accounting graduates. Students may gain better understanding of accountancy career opportunities and make more informed career choices. Lecturers and counsellors may obtain useful information for strengthening career guidance, while institutions and curriculum developers may use the findings to improve career-oriented components of Accounting Education programmes. Professional accounting bodies may also benefit from increased student awareness of available professional pathways. The study recommends that tertiary institutions should strengthen the provision of accountancy career information through career counselling, professional seminars, career fairs, guest lectures, mentorship activities, and interactions with practicing accountants. Lecturers and career counsellors should provide students with current and comprehensive information about accounting career opportunities, professional qualifications, required skills, and career progression. Professional accounting bodies should also increase their engagement with Accounting Education students to improve access to reliable career information. The study concludes that adequate accountancy career information can significantly contribute to informed career choice among Accounting Education students.
