Effect of Practical Bank Deposit Exercises on Students’ Banking Transaction Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Banking transaction skills are important competencies for Accounting Education students because accounting and financial-service workplaces require employees to understand and perform routine banking activities accurately, efficiently, and professionally. Bank deposits involve several practical procedures, including completing deposit instruments, identifying appropriate account information, verifying transaction details, preparing supporting documents, recording deposits, and reconciling banking records. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics may have limited opportunities to practise authentic banking procedures within conventional classroom environments. Practical Bank Deposit Exercises provide students with opportunities to simulate routine deposit transactions and apply banking concepts to realistic financial situations. Such practical activities may strengthen students’ ability to perform banking transactions accurately while developing their confidence and workplace readiness. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Practical Bank Deposit Exercises on banking transaction skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical competencies through concrete experiences, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge and practical skills enhances students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional employment. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Practical Bank Deposit Exercises may influence students’ banking transaction skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, banking transaction skills assessment scales, practical bank deposit tasks, performance rubrics, observation checklists, simulated banking documents, transaction-recording exercises, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Practical Bank Deposit Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as identification of deposit transactions, selection of appropriate deposit instruments, completion of deposit slips, account-number identification, account-name verification, bank-name identification, branch identification, depositor identification, beneficiary identification, transaction-date recording, amount recording, amount-in-words recording, amount-in-figures recording, currency identification, depositor-signature procedures, authorized-signature procedures, account-type identification, savings-account deposits, current-account deposits, business-account deposits, cash deposits, cheque deposits, electronic-transfer deposits, third-party deposits, customer deposits, business deposits, bulk deposits, deposit documentation, source-document preparation, supporting-document verification, transaction-detail verification, customer-information verification, account-information verification, deposit authorization, transaction confirmation, deposit validation, deposit processing, transaction recording, cash-book recording, bank-column recording, bank-ledger recording, receipt preparation, deposit-receipt verification, bank-statement verification, bank-record updating, transaction classification, transaction coding, account reconciliation, bank reconciliation, deposit-error identification, deposit-error correction, duplicate-entry identification, incomplete-document identification, incorrect-account identification, incorrect-amount identification, signature-error identification, date-error identification, account-number error identification, deposit-reference identification, transaction-reference recording, teller-related procedures, banking-counter procedures, customer-service procedures, bank enquiry procedures, deposit confirmation, deposit follow-up, transaction tracking, transaction-status verification, bank communication, telephone banking communication, email banking communication, digital banking procedures, online banking awareness, mobile banking awareness, electronic payment awareness, transaction-security practices, customer-identification procedures, confidentiality, financial-information protection, fraud-awareness, transaction-risk awareness, record keeping, document filing, document retrieval, transaction monitoring, task sequencing, task prioritization, time management, accuracy monitoring, quality control, practical demonstrations, role-play activities, individual exercises, group exercises, repeated practice, lecturer guidance, peer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging banking scenarios. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Practical Bank Deposit Exercises, practical banking experiences, and banking transaction skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Practical Bank Deposit Exercises on students’ banking transaction skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, banking transaction skill scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Practical Bank Deposit Exercises have a significant positive effect on banking transaction skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to structured practical bank deposit exercises are expected to demonstrate improved ability to prepare, process, record, verify, and manage routine banking transactions. Deposit-slip completion activities may improve students’ ability to record account numbers, account names, transaction dates, amounts, currencies, and other required information accurately. Amount-in-words and amount-in-figures exercises may strengthen students’ accuracy in documenting financial transactions. Signature-related activities may improve students’ understanding of appropriate authorization procedures. Account-type exercises may strengthen students’ ability to distinguish savings, current, and business accounts. Cash-deposit activities may improve students’ ability to process routine cash transactions. Third-party, customer, business, and bulk-deposit exercises may expose students to different practical banking situations. Deposit-documentation activities may strengthen students’ ability to prepare and organize transaction records. Supporting-document verification may improve students’ ability to confirm the completeness of banking documentation. Transaction-detail and account-information verification may reduce errors in banking transactions. Authorization and validation exercises may strengthen students’ understanding of transaction controls. Transaction-recording activities may improve students’ ability to maintain accurate accounting and banking records. Cash-book and bank-ledger exercises may strengthen students’ ability to connect banking transactions with accounting records.
