Effect of Memorandum Account Exercises on Students’ Memorandum Accounting Skills in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Memorandum accounts are important accounting tools used to provide supplementary information, maintain statistical records, and support the determination of amounts that may not be recorded directly in the ordinary double-entry books. Understanding memorandum accounting requires students to interpret accounting information, prepare appropriate memorandum accounts, record relevant details accurately, and apply prescribed procedures to practical accounting situations. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities may experience difficulties in developing memorandum accounting skills when instruction is predominantly theoretical and students have limited opportunities for practical exercises. Memorandum Account Exercises provide students with opportunities to practise the preparation, analysis, interpretation, and application of memorandum accounts using realistic accounting transactions and business scenarios. Such exercises may strengthen students’ practical accounting competence, accuracy, analytical ability, and confidence in handling memorandum accounting tasks. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Memorandum Account Exercises on students’ memorandum accounting skills in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical accounting competencies through concrete experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant accounting knowledge and practical skills improves students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional accounting responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Memorandum Account Exercises may influence students’ memorandum accounting skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, memorandum accounting skills assessment scales, practical memorandum-account tasks, accounting scenarios, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, structured exercises, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Memorandum Account Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as identification of memorandum accounts, understanding of memorandum accounting principles, interpretation of memorandum-account requirements, preparation of memorandum accounts, selection of appropriate account formats, recording of relevant information, classification of memorandum items, calculation of memorandum amounts, arrangement of memorandum entries, narration of memorandum transactions, use of supplementary accounting records, treatment of memorandum items, distinction between memorandum and ordinary ledger accounts, identification of information requiring memorandum treatment, application of memorandum accounting procedures, preparation of supporting schedules, cross-referencing of memorandum records, checking of memorandum entries, verification of calculations, identification of errors, correction of errors, reconciliation of memorandum information, interpretation of memorandum-account balances, analysis of memorandum-account information, preparation of reports from memorandum records, documentation procedures, record organization, filing procedures, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group exercises, case studies, role-play activities, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging memorandum accounting scenarios. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Memorandum Account Exercises, practical experiences, and memorandum accounting skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Memorandum Account Exercises on students’ memorandum accounting skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, memorandum accounting skill scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Memorandum Account Exercises have a significant positive effect on students’ memorandum accounting skills in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to structured and practical memorandum accounting exercises are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify, prepare, record, calculate, interpret, analyze, verify, and reconcile memorandum accounting information. Identification activities may improve students’ understanding of the purpose and application of memorandum accounts. Interpretation exercises may strengthen students’ ability to understand memorandum-account requirements. Account-format activities may improve students’ ability to select and prepare appropriate memorandum records. Recording exercises may strengthen students’ accuracy in documenting relevant information. Classification activities may improve students’ ability to distinguish different memorandum items. Calculation exercises may strengthen numerical accuracy and computational competence. Entry-arrangement activities may improve students’ ability to organize memorandum information systematically. Narration exercises may strengthen students’ ability to provide clear descriptions of memorandum transactions. Supplementary-record exercises may improve students’ ability to maintain accounting information outside ordinary ledger accounts. Activities involving the distinction between memorandum and ordinary ledger accounts may strengthen conceptual understanding. Supporting-schedule preparation may improve students’ ability to provide additional information for accounting purposes. Cross-referencing activities may strengthen students’ ability to connect related accounting records. Verification exercises may improve students’ ability to check entries and calculations. Error-identification and correction exercises may strengthen students’ ability to detect and resolve memorandum accounting mistakes. Reconciliation activities may improve students’ ability to compare memorandum information with related accounting records. Interpretation of memorandum balances may strengthen students’ ability to draw appropriate conclusions from supplementary records. Analysis exercises may improve students’ ability to use memorandum information in accounting decision-making. Reporting activities may strengthen students’ ability to communicate information derived from memorandum records. Documentation and record-organization exercises may improve students’ ability to maintain systematic accounting records. Practical demonstrations may provide students with clear models of memorandum accounting procedures. Guided exercises may provide structured support during skill development. Individual assignments may strengthen independent memorandum accounting competence. Group exercises may improve collaborative problem-solving. Case studies may expose students to realistic memorandum accounting situations. Role-play activities may simulate practical accounting responsibilities. Repeated practice may improve accuracy, speed, confidence, and independence. Peer assessment may expose students to alternative approaches to memorandum accounting tasks. Lecturer assessment and feedback may help students identify and correct errors. Self-assessment may encourage students to evaluate their practical performance. Reflective practice may help students learn from accounting mistakes. Progressively challenging scenarios may prepare students for increasingly complex memorandum accounting responsibilities. However, the effectiveness of Memorandum Account Exercises may be constrained by inadequate accounting laboratories, limited access to realistic accounting records, insufficient practical instructional materials, large class sizes, limited practical training periods, inadequate lecturer supervision, outdated teaching materials, insufficient access to accounting software, inadequate feedback, low student participation, and weak integration of practical memorandum accounting activities into Accounting Education curricula. The study therefore expects realistic, structured, hands-on, workplace-oriented, and adequately supervised Memorandum Account Exercises to contribute significantly to improved memorandum accounting skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Memorandum Account Exercises, memorandum accounting skills, Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, Human Capital Theory, accounting education, practical accounting education, memorandum accounts, supplementary accounting records, accounting documentation, accounting calculations, accounting analysis, accounting-record verification, error detection, error correction, reconciliation, accounting schedules, financial information analysis, accounting competence, workplace readiness, employability skills, professional competence, Accounting Education students, Nigerian universities, and Accounting Education in Nigeria. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Memorandum Account Exercises into Accounting Education programmes, establishing realistic accounting simulation environments, providing appropriate memorandum-account materials and practical exercises, strengthening students’ ability to distinguish and prepare memorandum records, incorporating calculation, verification, error-correction, reconciliation, and reporting activities, providing repeated practical exercises and structured feedback, expanding collaboration between universities and accounting workplaces, and aligning Accounting Education programmes with contemporary accounting practice requirements in Nigeria.
