Effect of Inventory Requisition Exercises on Students’ Inventory Documentation Skills in Nigerian Polytechnics

 

Abstract

Inventory documentation is an essential practical accounting competency because organizations require accurate records of materials requested, issued, received, transferred, and utilized. Proper inventory documentation supports stock control, accountability, expenditure monitoring, purchasing decisions, and reliable financial reporting. Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics are expected to develop practical skills in preparing and processing inventory-related documents, yet classroom instruction may provide limited opportunities for students to practise realistic inventory requisition procedures. Inventory Requisition Exercises provide students with practical opportunities to prepare, examine, authorize, record, and process requests for inventory items using simulated organizational situations. These exercises may strengthen students’ ability to document inventory movements accurately and apply appropriate inventory-control procedures. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Inventory Requisition Exercises on students’ inventory documentation skills in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge and practical skills enhances students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for workplace responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Inventory Requisition Exercises may influence students’ inventory documentation skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, inventory documentation skills assessment scales, simulated inventory requisition forms, stores documents, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, inventory-recording exercises, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, inventory documentation skill scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Inventory Requisition Exercises have a significant positive effect on students’ inventory documentation skills in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to structured inventory requisition exercises are expected to demonstrate improved ability to prepare, verify, authorize, process, record, and maintain inventory documentation. Identification of requisition forms may improve students’ understanding of the purpose and use of inventory request documents. Requisition-preparation exercises may strengthen students’ ability to provide complete and accurate information. Requisition-numbering activities may improve systematic document control. Date-recording exercises may strengthen documentation accuracy. Department and requesting-officer identification may improve students’ ability to assign inventory requests to the appropriate organizational units. Item-description activities may improve the clarity of inventory documentation. Item-code and stock-keeping-unit exercises may strengthen students’ ability to identify inventory items accurately. Quantity and unit-of-measure activities may improve numerical and descriptive accuracy. Inventory-specification exercises may strengthen students’ ability to distinguish similar stock items. Purpose-of-request activities may improve students’ ability to justify inventory requirements.
