Effect of Formative Assessment Strategies on Students’ Mastery of Financial Accounting Concepts in Nigeria
Abstract
Formative assessment is an important instructional strategy for improving students' understanding and mastery of financial accounting concepts because it provides continuous opportunities to identify learning difficulties, receive feedback, correct errors, and strengthen understanding during the learning process. Financial accounting students need a strong conceptual foundation to understand and apply principles relating to transaction recording, double-entry bookkeeping, ledger preparation, trial balance, adjustments, financial statement preparation, and interpretation of accounting information. However, conventional assessment practices may place greater emphasis on end-of-term examinations and summative evaluation, providing limited opportunities for early identification and correction of students' misconceptions and learning gaps. Formative Assessment Strategies provide continuous assessment opportunities through classroom questioning, quizzes, short accounting exercises, peer assessment, self-assessment, feedback, concept checks, and other learning activities designed to monitor students' progress. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of formative assessment strategies on students' mastery of financial accounting concepts in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Assessment for Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Mastery Learning Theory. Assessment for Learning Theory emphasizes the use of assessment evidence and timely feedback to improve teaching and learning during instruction. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes students' active participation, prior knowledge, interaction, and construction of understanding through meaningful learning experiences. Mastery Learning Theory emphasizes continuous assessment, identification of learning difficulties, corrective instruction, repeated practice, and opportunities for students to achieve clearly defined learning objectives. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how formative assessment strategies may influence students' mastery of financial accounting concepts. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise students offering financial accounting courses in selected secondary schools, colleges of education, polytechnics, and universities across Nigeria, depending on the level selected for the study. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, institutions, departments or schools, classes, and eligible students. Formative assessment strategies will be assessed using indicators such as classroom questioning, short quizzes, weekly accounting exercises, diagnostic tests, concept checks, immediate feedback, peer assessment, self-assessment, classroom discussions, error-analysis activities, correction exercises, practice tests, exit tickets, group assessment activities, individualized feedback, progress monitoring, opportunities for reassessment, and corrective instruction. Students' mastery of financial accounting concepts will be assessed using indicators such as understanding of accounting principles, double-entry bookkeeping, transaction analysis, journal entries, ledger posting, trial balance preparation, adjustments, depreciation accounting, inventory accounting, bank reconciliation, correction of errors, preparation of financial statements, interpretation of accounting information, conceptual reasoning, ability to explain accounting procedures, identification of accounting misconceptions, application of accounting principles to unfamiliar situations, and retention of previously learned concepts. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized financial accounting concept mastery tests, classroom assessment records, accounting exercises, observation checklists, achievement tests, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental design is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, formative assessment experiences, learning activities, and levels of financial accounting concept mastery. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of formative assessment strategies on students' mastery of financial accounting concepts. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students' mastery scores before and after exposure to formative assessment strategies may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving conventional assessment practices to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that formative assessment strategies have a significant positive effect on students' mastery of financial accounting concepts in Nigeria. Students who participate regularly in well-designed formative assessment activities are expected to demonstrate stronger conceptual understanding, improved accounting accuracy, greater retention, and better ability to apply financial accounting principles than students exposed primarily to summative assessment. Frequent quizzes, short accounting exercises, classroom questioning, and concept checks may enable lecturers to identify misconceptions early and provide immediate corrective feedback. Peer and self-assessment may encourage students to reflect on their accounting procedures, recognize errors, and take greater responsibility for their learning. Repeated practice and opportunities for reassessment may strengthen students' understanding of difficult concepts such as double-entry bookkeeping, adjustments, depreciation, inventory valuation, bank reconciliation, correction of errors, and financial statement preparation. Error-analysis activities may also help students understand why accounting mistakes occur and how they can be corrected. However, large class sizes, heavy lecturer workloads, limited instructional time, inadequate assessment resources, inconsistent feedback, inadequate teacher training, and students' reluctance to participate actively in continuous assessment activities may reduce the effectiveness of formative assessment strategies. The study therefore expects systematic, timely, feedback-oriented, and mastery-focused formative assessment to contribute significantly to improved mastery of financial accounting concepts among students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on formative assessment, financial accounting education, mastery of accounting concepts, assessment for learning, mastery learning, constructivist learning, continuous assessment, accounting pedagogy, accounting achievement, conceptual understanding, and educational assessment in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Education, state ministries of education, National Universities Commission, National Board for Technical Education, universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, secondary schools, accounting educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving financial accounting teaching and assessment. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating formative assessment strategies into financial accounting instruction, strengthening continuous feedback mechanisms, developing regular diagnostic accounting assessments, training accounting educators in formative assessment techniques, increasing opportunities for practice and reassessment, incorporating peer and self-assessment activities, using technology-supported quizzes and learning platforms where available, and aligning financial accounting assessment practices with students' conceptual mastery and long-term understanding of accounting principles in Nigeria.
