Effect of Financial Accounting Practicals on Students’ Application of Accounting Principles among HND Accounting Education Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Financial accounting practicals are an important component of accounting education because they provide students with opportunities to translate theoretical accounting knowledge into practical activities involving the identification, recording, classification, summarization, and reporting of financial transactions. However, HND Accounting Education students may experience difficulties applying accounting principles when classroom instruction emphasizes theoretical explanations and routine exercises without sufficient opportunities to perform authentic accounting tasks. Financial accounting practicals provide opportunities for students to work with source documents, record transactions, prepare journals and ledger accounts, reconcile accounts, prepare trial balances, make accounting adjustments, and produce financial statements. Practical activities may strengthen students' ability to connect accounting principles with actual accounting procedures and develop greater accuracy, confidence, and independence in applying accounting knowledge. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of financial accounting practicals on students' application of accounting principles among HND Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Situated Learning Theory. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, observation and reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Constructivist Learning Theory explains how students actively construct knowledge by connecting new learning with prior knowledge and practical experiences. Situated Learning Theory emphasizes the development of knowledge and skills through participation in realistic contexts and activities that resemble authentic professional practice. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how financial accounting practicals may influence students' application of accounting principles. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise HND Accounting Education students enrolled in selected public and private polytechnics across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible HND Accounting Education students. Financial accounting practicals will be assessed using indicators such as source-document analysis, transaction identification, transaction recording, journal-entry preparation, ledger posting, balancing of ledger accounts, trial-balance preparation, cash-book preparation, bank reconciliation, correction of accounting errors, depreciation calculations, inventory valuation, provisions and accruals, control accounts, partnership accounting, company accounting, manufacturing accounts, incomplete records, departmental accounts, branch accounting, financial statement preparation, financial statement adjustments, accounting software practicals, spreadsheet exercises, computerized accounting activities, practical case studies, business transaction simulations, classroom accounting projects, individual practical exercises, group practical activities, lecturer demonstrations, guided practice, independent practice, repeated practical exercises, real-world accounting scenarios, use of accounting documents, error-identification exercises, error-correction activities, practical feedback, observation, reflection, and opportunities for students to reproduce accounting procedures independently. Students' application of accounting principles will be assessed using indicators such as correct application of the accounting equation, double-entry principles, accrual and matching principles, consistency, prudence, going-concern assumptions, business entity concept, historical-cost principles, revenue-recognition principles, materiality, substance-over-form considerations where applicable, correct classification of accounting items, appropriate recognition and measurement of transactions, accurate journal entries, correct ledger postings, appropriate accounting adjustments, accurate preparation of trial balances, correct treatment of errors, appropriate depreciation treatment, correct inventory valuation, appropriate recognition of provisions and accruals, accurate preparation of financial statements, interpretation of accounting information, justification of accounting treatments, identification of inappropriate accounting treatments, correction of accounting errors, application of accounting principles to unfamiliar transactions, ability to distinguish between similar accounting treatments, ability to explain the principles underlying accounting procedures, and consistency in applying accounting principles across practical accounting tasks. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized practical accounting tests, performance-based accounting tasks, accounting workbooks, source-document exercises, observation checklists, competency-based assessment rubrics, accounting software practical exercises, case studies, scenario-based questions, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to financial accounting practicals, practical learning experiences, and levels of accounting principles application. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of financial accounting practicals on students' application of accounting principles. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students' application scores before and after exposure to financial accounting practicals may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional theoretical instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that financial accounting practicals have a significant positive effect on students' application of accounting principles among HND Accounting Education students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and practical financial accounting activities are expected to demonstrate stronger ability to apply accounting principles accurately and consistently than students receiving predominantly theoretical instruction. Source-document analysis may help students connect business transactions with the accounting information required for recording purposes. Transaction-identification activities may enable students to determine the accounts affected by particular business events before applying debit-and-credit procedures. Journal-entry and ledger-posting exercises may strengthen students' understanding of how accounting principles guide the recording and classification of transactions. Trial-balance preparation may provide opportunities for students to verify the accuracy and completeness of accounting records. Bank-reconciliation activities may help students apply accounting principles to differences between cash-book and bank-statement balances. Correction-of-error exercises may strengthen students' ability to identify inappropriate accounting treatments and apply appropriate corrective procedures. Depreciation and inventory-valuation practicals may help students understand how accounting principles influence the measurement and presentation of assets. Provisions and accrual exercises may provide opportunities to apply the accrual and matching principles to realistic financial situations. Partnership and company accounting practicals may help students apply accounting principles to more complex organizational structures. Financial statement preparation activities may enable students to understand how individual accounting principles influence the final presentation of financial information. Accounting software and spreadsheet practicals may expose students to computerized procedures and allow them to observe how accounting principles are implemented in digital accounting systems. Real-world business scenarios may strengthen students' ability to transfer accounting knowledge from classroom exercises to unfamiliar transactions. Error-identification and correction activities may encourage students to evaluate their own work and improve accuracy. Repeated practical activities may strengthen procedural fluency and retention, while lecturer demonstrations and guided practice may provide appropriate support before students perform tasks independently. Feedback and competency-based assessment may help students identify weaknesses in their application of accounting principles and improve subsequent performance. However, inadequate accounting laboratories, insufficient practical equipment, limited access to accounting software, large class sizes, inadequate instructional time, shortages of qualified accounting educators, poorly designed practical exercises, limited access to authentic accounting documents, and excessive emphasis on routine procedures rather than conceptual understanding may reduce the effectiveness of financial accounting practicals. The study therefore expects well-designed, authentic, curriculum-aligned, and adequately supported financial accounting practicals to contribute significantly to improved application of accounting principles among HND Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on financial accounting practicals, application of accounting principles, experiential learning, constructivist learning, situated learning, practical accounting education, accounting education students, HND education, accounting pedagogy, skills acquisition, authentic learning, accounting laboratories, computerized accounting education, financial accounting instruction, professional accounting competencies, and polytechnic education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Board for Technical Education, polytechnics, accounting education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening practical financial accounting education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating financial accounting practicals into HND Accounting Education programmes, expanding accounting laboratory facilities, providing students with authentic source documents and business records, increasing access to computerized accounting and spreadsheet applications, combining practical activities with theoretical explanations, strengthening lecturer demonstration and guided practice, providing repeated opportunities for independent accounting practice, developing competency-based assessments of accounting principles application, improving practical teaching resources, and aligning HND Accounting Education with the practical, analytical, technological, and professional competencies required in contemporary accounting practice in Nigeria.
