Effect of Entrepreneurial Accounting Challenges on Students’ Business Problem-Solving Skills in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Entrepreneurial accounting skills are increasingly important for Accounting Education students because emerging entrepreneurs require the ability to apply accounting knowledge when identifying, analysing, and resolving business problems. Effective business problem-solving involves interpreting financial information, identifying accounting-related challenges, evaluating alternative solutions, making appropriate decisions, and applying accounting principles to practical business situations. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities may have limited opportunities to apply accounting knowledge to realistic entrepreneurial problems, which may affect their ability to develop practical business problem-solving skills. Entrepreneurial Accounting Challenges provide students with opportunities to engage with realistic business situations involving financial planning, cost management, pricing, cash management, record keeping, budgeting, profitability, and other accounting-related decisions. These practical challenges may enhance students' ability to analyse business problems, evaluate alternatives, and develop appropriate accounting-based solutions. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Entrepreneurial Accounting Challenges on students' business problem-solving skills in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical competencies through concrete experiences, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge and practical skills improves students' productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional and entrepreneurial responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Entrepreneurial Accounting Challenges may influence students' business problem-solving skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, business problem-solving skills assessment scales, entrepreneurial accounting case scenarios, practical accounting challenges, performance assessment rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Entrepreneurial Accounting Challenges will be assessed using indicators such as business-start-up accounting challenges, source-document analysis, transaction classification, sales recording, purchase recording, expense documentation, cash-management challenges, petty cash management, bank reconciliation, inventory management, inventory valuation, cost calculation, pricing decisions, budgeting, cash-flow planning, working-capital management, accounts-receivable management, accounts-payable management, payroll accounting, tax-related accounting challenges, financial-statement preparation, financial-statement interpretation, profitability analysis, break-even analysis, cost-volume-profit analysis, variance analysis, financial-data analysis, financial record keeping, accounting information processing, accounting software use, spreadsheet-based accounting tasks, financial control, internal control, fraud-risk identification, financial-error detection, financial-error correction, business-performance evaluation, financial decision-making, resource allocation, investment evaluation, financing decisions, business-expansion decisions, financial-risk assessment, and accounting-based entrepreneurial decision-making. Students' business problem-solving skills will be assessed using indicators such as problem identification, information gathering, financial-data interpretation, problem analysis, identification of relevant accounting information, identification of causes of business problems, evaluation of alternatives, comparison of possible solutions, application of accounting principles, numerical analysis, financial reasoning, cost analysis, revenue analysis, cash-flow analysis, profitability analysis, risk assessment, resource evaluation, solution generation, solution selection, decision-making, justification of decisions, implementation planning, monitoring of solutions, evaluation of outcomes, error detection, error correction, critical thinking, analytical thinking, logical reasoning, creativity, adaptability, communication, teamwork, confidence, independent problem-solving, and overall business problem-solving competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Entrepreneurial Accounting Challenges, practical experiences, and business problem-solving skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Entrepreneurial Accounting Challenges on students' business problem-solving skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, business problem-solving scores before and after participation in the challenges may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Entrepreneurial Accounting Challenges have a significant positive effect on students' business problem-solving skills in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to structured entrepreneurial accounting challenges are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify business problems, analyse financial information, evaluate alternatives, and develop appropriate accounting-based solutions. Critical-thinking activities may improve students' ability to examine business situations from multiple perspectives. Analytical-thinking activities may strengthen students' ability to interpret complex financial information. Logical-reasoning activities may improve students' ability to develop coherent solutions. Creativity-oriented challenges may encourage students to develop alternative approaches to business problems. Adaptability activities may prepare students to respond to changing business circumstances. Communication activities may strengthen students' ability to explain accounting-based solutions to business stakeholders. Team-based challenges may improve collaborative problem-solving. Confidence-building activities may strengthen students' willingness to address unfamiliar accounting problems independently. However, the effectiveness of Entrepreneurial Accounting Challenges may be constrained by inadequate accounting laboratories, limited access to realistic business cases, insufficient computers and accounting software, unreliable electricity supply, poor internet connectivity, large class sizes, limited practical training periods, inadequate lecturer supervision, outdated instructional materials, insufficient exposure to actual entrepreneurial environments, limited university-industry collaboration, inadequate feedback, low student participation, and weak integration of entrepreneurial accounting activities into Accounting Education curricula. The study therefore expects realistic, structured, hands-on, challenging, technology-supported, workplace-oriented, and adequately supervised Entrepreneurial Accounting Challenges to contribute significantly to improved business problem-solving skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Entrepreneurial Accounting Challenges, business problem-solving skills, experiential learning, social cognitive learning, human capital development, accounting education, practical accounting education, entrepreneurial accounting, business decision-making, financial analysis, cost management, budgeting, cash-flow management, working-capital management, financial reporting, accounting information systems, accounting software, spreadsheet skills, financial control, internal control, fraud awareness, business performance evaluation, financial risk assessment, entrepreneurial competence, employability skills, professional competence, Accounting Education students, Nigerian universities, and Accounting Education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, university administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, entrepreneurship education coordinators, professional accounting bodies, entrepreneurs, employers, industry partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students' practical accounting and entrepreneurial competencies. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Entrepreneurial Accounting Challenges into Accounting Education programmes, developing realistic business-accounting simulation environments, providing authentic entrepreneurial cases and financial records, strengthening students' financial-analysis and business decision-making skills, incorporating technology-supported accounting challenges, providing repeated practical problem-solving activities and structured feedback, expanding collaboration between universities and entrepreneurial organizations, and aligning Accounting Education programmes with contemporary entrepreneurial and business problem-solving requirements in Nigeria.
