Effect of Discount Accounting Exercises on Students’ Trade Discount and Cash Discount Calculation Skills in Nigeria

Abstract

Discount calculation is an important practical accounting competency that enables accounting personnel to determine appropriate reductions in the prices of goods and services, accurately record transactions, and distinguish between different forms of discounts used in business activities. Trade discounts and cash discounts are common features of commercial transactions, but students may experience difficulties distinguishing their purposes, calculating discount amounts, determining net invoice values, and recording related transactions correctly. Discount Accounting Exercises provide students with opportunities to practise these calculations using realistic business transactions and accounting scenarios. Such exercises may strengthen students’ numerical accuracy, accounting competence, problem-solving ability, and practical readiness for accounting-related responsibilities. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Discount Accounting Exercises on students’ trade discount and cash discount calculation skills in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical accounting competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant accounting knowledge and practical skills enhances students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Discount Accounting Exercises may influence students’ trade discount and cash discount calculation skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities and polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select institutions, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, discount-calculation skills assessment tests, simulated invoices, sales and purchase documents, practical calculation tasks, performance rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Discount Accounting Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as identification of trade discounts, identification of cash discounts, distinction between trade and cash discounts, interpretation of discount terms, discount-rate identification, percentage discount calculation, trade discount calculation, cash discount calculation, single trade discount calculation, multiple trade discount calculation, successive discount calculation, combined discount calculation, equivalent discount calculation, net invoice price calculation, gross invoice value calculation, invoice-price determination, catalogue-price interpretation, list-price identification, marked-price identification, quantity-based discount calculation, volume-discount calculation, customer discount calculation, supplier discount calculation, prompt-payment discount calculation, settlement-discount calculation, discount-period interpretation, payment-term interpretation, credit-term interpretation, discount deadline determination, payment-date determination, amount due calculation, amount payable after discount, amount payable without discount, discount forfeiture calculation, discount savings calculation, discount comparison, discount decision-making, invoice verification, transaction-document interpretation, discount documentation, discount recording, sales transaction calculation, purchase transaction calculation, accounts-receivable calculation, accounts-payable calculation, cash-receipt calculation, cash-payment calculation, journal-entry preparation, ledger posting, discount-account treatment, sales-discount recording, purchase-discount recording, discount received, discount allowed, expense and revenue classification, transaction classification, accounting-period determination, arithmetic accuracy, decimal calculation, percentage conversion, fraction-to-percentage conversion, ratio interpretation, calculator use, spreadsheet calculation, accounting-software calculation, error identification, calculation-error correction, invoice discrepancy identification, unauthorized-discount identification, incorrect-rate identification, incorrect-amount identification, duplicate-discount identification, unsupported-discount identification, discount-policy interpretation, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group exercises, case studies, role-play activities, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging discount-calculation scenarios. Students’ trade discount and cash discount calculation skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to identify trade discounts, identify cash discounts, distinguish between trade and cash discounts, interpret discount terms, identify discount rates, calculate discount percentages, calculate trade discounts, calculate cash discounts, calculate single trade discounts, calculate multiple trade discounts, calculate successive discounts, calculate combined discounts, determine equivalent discount rates, calculate net invoice prices, calculate gross invoice values, determine invoice prices, interpret catalogue prices, identify list prices, identify marked prices, calculate quantity-based discounts, calculate volume discounts, calculate customer discounts, calculate supplier discounts, calculate prompt-payment discounts, calculate settlement discounts, interpret discount periods, interpret payment terms, interpret credit terms, determine discount deadlines, determine payment dates, calculate amounts due, calculate amounts payable after discounts, calculate amounts payable without discounts, calculate forfeited discounts, calculate discount savings, compare discount alternatives, make appropriate discount decisions, verify invoices, interpret transaction documents, document discounts, record discounts, calculate sales transactions, calculate purchase transactions, calculate accounts-receivable balances, calculate accounts-payable balances, calculate cash receipts, calculate cash payments, prepare journal entries, post ledger entries, account for discounts, record sales discounts, record purchase discounts, account for discounts received and allowed, classify discount-related transactions, determine appropriate accounting periods, perform accurate percentage calculations, convert decimals and percentages correctly, interpret ratios, use calculators appropriately, use spreadsheets for discount calculations, use accounting software for transaction calculations, identify calculation errors, correct calculation errors, identify invoice discrepancies, detect unauthorized discounts, identify incorrect discount rates, identify incorrect discount amounts, detect duplicate discounts, identify unsupported discounts, interpret discount policies, demonstrate numerical accuracy, demonstrate attention to detail, demonstrate accounting competence, demonstrate analytical ability, demonstrate problem-solving ability, demonstrate decision-making ability, demonstrate calculation confidence, demonstrate efficiency, demonstrate digital competence, demonstrate accountability, demonstrate responsibility, demonstrate professionalism, and overall trade discount and cash discount calculation competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Discount Accounting Exercises, practical experiences, and discount-calculation skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Discount Accounting Exercises on students’ trade discount and cash discount calculation skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students’ discount-calculation scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Discount Accounting Exercises have a significant positive effect on students’ trade discount and cash discount calculation skills in Nigeria.
