Effect of Customer Account Enquiry Simulations on Students’ Customer-Service Skills in Accounting Education in Nigeria

Abstract

Customer-service skills are increasingly important in Accounting Education because accounting personnel regularly interact with customers and clients regarding account balances, transactions, payments, invoices, statements, refunds, charges, and other financial matters. Effective handling of customer account enquiries requires accurate information processing, active listening, clear communication, patience, professionalism, problem-solving, and appropriate use of accounting records and systems. However, Accounting Education students in Nigeria may have limited opportunities to practise customer account enquiry situations in realistic settings during their academic training. Customer Account Enquiry Simulations provide students with practical opportunities to respond to simulated customer questions, investigate account information, clarify financial transactions, resolve routine concerns, and communicate appropriate responses in controlled learning environments. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Customer Account Enquiry Simulations on customer-service skills in Accounting Education in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Service Quality Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical competencies through concrete experiences, reflection, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Service Quality Theory emphasizes the importance of reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy, and tangibles in delivering effective customer service. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Customer Account Enquiry Simulations may influence students' customer-service skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities and polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select institutions, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, customer-service skills assessment scales, simulated customer-enquiry tasks, role-play scenarios, performance rubrics, observation checklists, account-enquiry exercises, communication assessments, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Customer Account Enquiry Simulations will be assessed using indicators such as account-balance enquiries, transaction-history enquiries, account-statement enquiries, payment enquiries, invoice enquiries, receipt enquiries, billing enquiries, outstanding-balance enquiries, refund enquiries, account-adjustment enquiries, account-opening enquiries, account-closing enquiries, account-update enquiries, account-verification enquiries, transaction-confirmation enquiries, payment-confirmation enquiries, financial-information enquiries, account-access enquiries, password-related enquiries where applicable, account-document enquiries, customer-identification procedures, information-verification procedures, account-record review, transaction-record review, source-document review, financial-data verification, account-information retrieval, account-history retrieval, statement interpretation, transaction explanation, payment explanation, invoice explanation, billing explanation, refund explanation, account-adjustment explanation, customer identification, enquiry clarification, active listening, questioning techniques, information gathering, empathy, patience, professional communication, verbal communication, non-verbal communication, telephone enquiry handling, email enquiry handling, face-to-face enquiry handling, digital customer-service activities, complaint handling, problem identification, problem analysis, solution generation, solution communication, service recovery, escalation procedures, referral procedures, follow-up communication, customer documentation, enquiry recording, confidentiality, financial-information security, professional etiquette, workplace-policy compliance, accounting-procedure compliance, customer-service standards, role-play activities, guided practice, individual simulations, group simulations, repeated simulations, feedback activities, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, reflective activities, and progressively challenging customer-account scenarios. Students' customer-service skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to receive customer enquiries professionally, identify customer needs, listen attentively, ask relevant questions, clarify account-related concerns, retrieve appropriate account information, verify customer information, examine account records, interpret account statements, explain account balances, explain transaction histories, explain payments, explain invoices, explain receipts, explain billing information, explain outstanding balances, explain refunds, explain account adjustments, confirm transactions, confirm payments, respond to account-document requests, communicate financial information clearly, use appropriate accounting terminology, simplify complex financial information, maintain accuracy when responding to customers, demonstrate patience, demonstrate empathy, maintain professional tone, communicate respectfully, handle telephone enquiries, respond to email enquiries, manage face-to-face enquiries, use digital customer-service platforms, identify customer problems, analyse customer concerns, provide appropriate solutions, communicate solutions clearly, manage dissatisfied customers, perform service recovery, escalate complex issues appropriately, refer customers to appropriate personnel, follow up unresolved enquiries, document customer enquiries accurately, maintain confidentiality, protect customer financial information, comply with organizational procedures, maintain professional etiquette, demonstrate responsiveness, demonstrate reliability, demonstrate assurance, demonstrate empathy, demonstrate problem-solving ability, demonstrate communication competence, demonstrate interpersonal competence, demonstrate confidence, demonstrate adaptability, demonstrate professionalism, demonstrate customer orientation, and overall customer-service competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Customer Account Enquiry Simulations, simulation experiences, and customer-service skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Customer Account Enquiry Simulations on students' customer-service skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, customer-service skill scores before and after participation in the simulations may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Customer Account Enquiry Simulations have a significant positive effect on students' customer-service skills in Accounting Education in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured customer-account enquiry simulations are expected to demonstrate improved ability to communicate with customers, retrieve and interpret account information, explain financial transactions, respond to enquiries, resolve routine problems, and maintain professional relationships. Account-balance enquiry simulations may improve students' ability to explain balances accurately and clearly. Transaction-history activities may strengthen students' ability to investigate and explain previous transactions. Account-statement exercises may improve students' ability to interpret financial information and communicate relevant details to customers. Payment, invoice, receipt, and billing enquiries may strengthen students' ability to explain common accounting transactions. Outstanding-balance scenarios may improve students' ability to communicate payment obligations professionally. Refund and account-adjustment scenarios may strengthen students' ability to investigate financial issues and explain appropriate procedures. Account-opening, account-closing, and account-update simulations may expose students to routine customer-service processes. Account-verification activities may improve students' ability to confirm customer information and protect financial records. Transaction and payment confirmation exercises may strengthen students' accuracy when responding to customers. Account-document activities may improve students' ability to manage requests for statements, receipts, invoices, and related documents. Customer-identification exercises may strengthen students' understanding of appropriate verification procedures. Account-record review may improve students' ability to locate and interpret relevant information before responding. Source-document review may strengthen students' ability to verify transaction details. Information-retrieval activities may improve students' speed and accuracy in accessing customer account information. Statement-interpretation activities may strengthen students' ability to explain financial information in simple and understandable terms. Transaction-explanation exercises may improve students' ability to communicate accounting information to non-accounting customers. Active-listening activities may help students understand customer concerns before responding. Questioning exercises may strengthen students' ability to obtain relevant information. Empathy and patience activities may improve students' ability to manage customers respectfully. Telephone, email, and face-to-face enquiry simulations may strengthen students' communication across different service channels. Digital customer-service activities may prepare students for technology-supported accounting and financial-service environments. Problem-identification exercises may improve students' ability to determine the actual nature of customer concerns. Problem-analysis activities may strengthen students' ability to investigate account-related issues before providing responses. Solution-generation activities may improve students' ability to develop appropriate responses to routine customer problems. Solution-communication activities may strengthen students' ability to explain available options clearly. Service-recovery simulations may improve students' ability to respond appropriately when customers experience dissatisfaction. Escalation and referral exercises may help students recognize situations requiring supervisory or specialized intervention. Follow-up activities may strengthen students' ability to ensure that unresolved enquiries receive appropriate attention. Enquiry-documentation exercises may improve students' ability to maintain accurate customer-service records. Confidentiality activities may strengthen students' ability to protect sensitive financial information. Professional-etiquette activities may improve students' conduct during customer interactions. Repeated simulations may increase students' confidence, responsiveness, accuracy, and independence. Feedback from lecturers and peers may help students identify weaknesses in their customer-service approaches and improve subsequent performance. However, the effectiveness of Customer Account Enquiry Simulations may be constrained by inadequate simulation facilities, limited access to accounting software, insufficient computers, poor internet connectivity, unreliable electricity supply, large class sizes, limited simulation periods, inadequate lecturer training, limited access to authentic customer-account scenarios, outdated instructional resources, insufficient feedback, low student participation, weak industry partnerships, and inadequate integration of customer-service training into Accounting Education curricula. The study therefore expects realistic, structured, practical, technology-supported, learner-centred, and adequately supervised Customer Account Enquiry Simulations to contribute significantly to improved customer-service skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Customer Account Enquiry Simulations, customer-service skills, Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, Service Quality Theory, accounting education, practical accounting education, customer relations, client relations, financial-service communication, account enquiry management, account-information management, transaction communication, statement interpretation, invoice communication, billing communication, payment communication, refund communication, account verification, financial-information handling, active listening, empathy, professional communication, problem-solving, service recovery, complaint management, escalation procedures, customer documentation, confidentiality, financial-information security, digital customer service, accounting software, workplace readiness, employability skills, professional competence, Accounting Education students, Nigerian universities, Nigerian polytechnics, and Accounting Education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, National Board for Technical Education, universities, polytechnics, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, employers, financial-service organizations, industry partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students' practical customer-service competencies. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Customer Account Enquiry Simulations into Accounting Education programmes, developing realistic account-enquiry scenarios, strengthening customer communication and active-listening training, incorporating account-information retrieval and interpretation activities, improving students' ability to explain financial information, strengthening digital customer-service competencies, incorporating service-recovery and escalation exercises, providing structured feedback and assessment, expanding industry participation, and aligning Accounting Education programmes with contemporary customer-service requirements in Nigerian accounting and financial-service workplaces.
