Effect of Cheque Preparation Exercises on Students’ Banking Documentation Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Banking documentation skills are essential competencies for Accounting Education students because accounting and financial-service workplaces require employees to prepare, examine, process, and maintain accurate banking documents. Cheques remain an important practical banking instrument through which students can learn how financial transactions are documented, authorized, recorded, and processed. However, Accounting Education students in Nigeria may have limited opportunities to practise cheque preparation and related documentation procedures in realistic learning environments. Cheque Preparation Exercises provide students with practical opportunities to complete simulated cheques, identify relevant transaction information, apply appropriate documentation procedures, verify cheque details, and connect cheque preparation with accounting and banking records. These exercises may strengthen students’ accuracy, attention to detail, documentation competence, and readiness for banking-related accounting responsibilities. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Cheque Preparation Exercises on students’ banking documentation skills among Accounting Education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge and practical skills improves students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional work. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Cheque Preparation Exercises may influence students’ banking documentation skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities and polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select institutions, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, banking documentation skills assessment scales, simulated cheque-preparation tasks, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, banking-document exercises, transaction-recording activities, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Cheque Preparation Exercises will be assessed using indicators such as cheque identification, cheque types, cheque-leaf identification, cheque-date recording, payee identification, amount-in-words recording, amount-in-figures recording, currency identification, drawer identification, drawee-bank identification, branch identification, account-number identification, cheque-number identification, signature procedures, authorized-signature verification, crossing procedures, general crossing, special crossing, restrictive crossing, account-payee crossing, bearer-cheque identification, order-cheque identification, post-dated cheque recognition, stale-cheque recognition, dishonoured-cheque recognition, cancelled-cheque identification, replacement-cheque documentation, cheque endorsement, endorsement verification, blank endorsement, special endorsement, restrictive endorsement, cheque custody, cheque security, cheque alteration detection, alteration prevention, overwriting prevention, signature verification, payee verification, account verification, transaction verification, supporting-document preparation, deposit-slip preparation, cheque-deposit documentation, cheque-receipt preparation, cheque-register preparation, cheque-record maintenance, cheque-book management, cheque issuance documentation, cheque-payment documentation, cheque collection documentation, bank-statement verification, cash-book recording, bank-column recording, bank-ledger recording, transaction classification, journal-entry preparation, ledger-posting activities, bank-reconciliation activities, cheque reconciliation, unpresented-cheque identification, outstanding-cheque identification, returned-cheque documentation, dishonoured-cheque recording, cheque-error identification, cheque-error correction, duplicate-cheque identification, missing-cheque identification, incorrect-payee identification, incorrect-amount identification, incorrect-date identification, incorrect-account identification, incorrect-signature identification, cheque-reference recording, document filing, document indexing, document retrieval, document tracking, electronic cheque-record management, digital banking documentation, accounting-software activities, spreadsheet activities, banking communication, customer-service procedures, transaction confidentiality, financial-information protection, fraud-awareness, document authorization, document approval, record verification, record updating, transaction monitoring, practical demonstrations, guided exercises, individual assignments, group assignments, role-play activities, repeated practice, peer assessment, lecturer assessment, self-assessment, feedback activities, reflective practice, and progressively challenging banking-documentation scenarios. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Cheque Preparation Exercises, practical experiences, and banking documentation skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Cheque Preparation Exercises on students’ banking documentation skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, banking documentation skill scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings.
