Effect of Cash-Flow Statement Exercises on Students’ Cash-Flow Interpretation Skills in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Cash-flow interpretation is an important accounting competency that enables students to understand the movement of cash and cash equivalents within business organizations and assess the financial implications of operating, investing, and financing activities. Accounting Education students are expected to interpret cash inflows and outflows, distinguish among different categories of cash flows, evaluate changes in cash balances, identify cash-flow trends, and use cash-flow information to support financial decision-making. However, students in Nigerian polytechnics may experience difficulties interpreting cash-flow statements because classroom instruction may emphasize theoretical knowledge without providing sufficient opportunities for practical analysis of realistic financial information. Cash-Flow Statement Exercises provide students with opportunities to prepare, examine, analyse, compare, and interpret cash-flow statements using practical business scenarios. Such exercises may strengthen students’ ability to understand cash movements and apply cash-flow information to accounting and business decisions. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Cash-Flow Statement Exercises on students’ cash-flow interpretation skills in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical accounting competencies through concrete experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant accounting knowledge and practical skills improves students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional accounting responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Cash-Flow Statement Exercises may influence students’ cash-flow interpretation skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, cash-flow interpretation skills assessment scales, practical cash-flow statement exercises, case-study tasks, financial-statement interpretation tests, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, cash-flow interpretation scores before and after participation in the exercises may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Cash-Flow Statement Exercises have a significant positive effect on students’ cash-flow interpretation skills in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to structured and practical cash-flow exercises are expected to demonstrate improved ability to understand, analyse, interpret, compare, and apply cash-flow information. Identification of cash and cash equivalents may strengthen students’ understanding of what constitutes cash for financial reporting purposes. Classification activities may improve students’ ability to distinguish operating, investing, and financing activities. Cash-receipt and cash-payment exercises may strengthen students’ ability to identify the direction of cash movements. Operating-activity exercises may improve students’ ability to assess the cash generated by core business operations. Investing-activity exercises may strengthen students’ understanding of cash flows associated with acquisition and disposal of long-term assets and investments. Financing-activity exercises may improve students’ ability to interpret borrowing, loan repayment, share issuance, and dividend transactions.
