Effect of Accounting Scenario-Based Questions on Students’ Application of Accounting Principles in Nigeria
Abstract
Accounting scenario-based questions are an important instructional and assessment strategy for developing students' ability to apply accounting principles to realistic and unfamiliar financial situations. Accounting education students are expected not only to recall accounting concepts and rules but also to interpret business circumstances, identify relevant accounting issues, select appropriate accounting treatments, and justify their conclusions. However, students may experience difficulties transferring theoretical accounting knowledge to practical situations when instruction and assessment rely heavily on conventional recall-based questions. Accounting Scenario-Based Questions provide students with opportunities to analyse realistic business transactions, interpret financial circumstances, apply accounting principles, evaluate alternative treatments, and justify accounting decisions. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of accounting scenario-based questions on students' application of accounting principles in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Constructivist Learning Theory, Experiential Learning Theory, and Cognitive Learning Theory. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, prior knowledge, contextual learning, and problem-solving in the construction of meaningful knowledge. Experiential Learning Theory emphasizes learning through concrete experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation, providing a suitable framework for students' engagement with realistic accounting scenarios. Cognitive Learning Theory emphasizes how learners acquire, organize, process, retain, and apply knowledge when solving problems and making decisions. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how accounting scenario-based questions may influence students' ability to apply accounting principles. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise accounting education students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible accounting education students. Accounting scenario-based questions will be assessed using indicators such as realistic business transactions, case-based accounting questions, application-oriented questions, multi-step accounting scenarios, ambiguous accounting situations, adjustment scenarios, financial reporting cases, costing scenarios, budgeting situations, taxation scenarios, auditing situations, ethical accounting cases, incomplete financial information, conflicting accounting evidence, alternative accounting treatments, decision-oriented questions, open-ended scenarios, industry-based cases, individual scenario tasks, group scenario discussions, progressive difficulty, contextualized questions, immediate feedback, guided analysis, explanation of accounting treatments, justification of conclusions, repeated scenario practice, and opportunities for reflection and revision. Students' application of accounting principles will be assessed using indicators such as ability to identify relevant accounting principles, interpret accounting transactions and business circumstances, select appropriate accounting treatments, apply accounting rules correctly, distinguish between alternative accounting treatments, prepare appropriate accounting entries, make necessary adjustments, recognize financial reporting implications, apply accounting principles to unfamiliar situations, integrate multiple accounting concepts, interpret financial information, identify ethical and professional considerations, justify accounting decisions, explain the reasoning behind accounting treatments, detect inappropriate accounting applications, evaluate alternative solutions, solve multi-step accounting problems, transfer accounting knowledge across different situations, and communicate accounting conclusions accurately. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized accounting principle application tests, scenario-based accounting assessments, practical accounting tasks, case studies, competency-based assessment rubrics, observation checklists, students' written responses, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to accounting scenario-based questions, learning experiences, and levels of accounting principle application. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of accounting scenario-based questions on students' application of accounting principles. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students' application scores before and after exposure to accounting scenario-based questions may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional accounting instruction and assessment to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that accounting scenario-based questions have a significant positive effect on students' application of accounting principles in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and realistic scenario-based questions are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to interpret accounting situations, identify relevant principles, select appropriate treatments, solve practical accounting problems, and justify their conclusions than students exposed primarily to recall-based questions. Realistic transaction scenarios may help students connect accounting principles with the business circumstances in which they are applied. Adjustment scenarios may strengthen students' ability to determine appropriate accounting treatments when financial information requires modification before reporting. Financial reporting cases may improve students' ability to evaluate alternative treatments and consider their effects on reported financial information. Costing and budgeting scenarios may help students apply accounting principles to managerial decisions, while taxation and auditing scenarios may strengthen their ability to transfer accounting knowledge across related areas of practice. Ethical and ambiguous accounting scenarios may further develop students' judgment by requiring them to evaluate competing considerations and justify their decisions. Multi-step and progressively difficult scenarios may strengthen students' ability to integrate several accounting concepts when solving complex problems. Group discussion of scenarios may promote peer learning and exposure to alternative interpretations, while individual scenario tasks may strengthen independent application skills. Immediate feedback and repeated practice may help students identify incorrect applications and improve their reasoning. However, limited access to realistic accounting cases, large class sizes, inadequate lecturer preparation, insufficient instructional time, students' weak foundational accounting knowledge, and excessive reliance on complex scenarios without adequate guidance may reduce the effectiveness of the approach. The study therefore expects well-designed, curriculum-aligned, realistic, progressive, and appropriately supervised accounting scenario-based questions to contribute significantly to improved application of accounting principles among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on accounting scenario-based questions, application of accounting principles, accounting education, scenario-based learning, case-based assessment, experiential learning, constructivist learning, cognitive learning, practical accounting education, accounting problem-solving, accounting judgment, accounting pedagogy, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, accounting education departments, accounting educators, professional accounting bodies, curriculum developers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening application-oriented accounting education. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating scenario-based questions into accounting instruction and assessment, developing realistic and industry-relevant accounting cases, increasing students' exposure to unfamiliar and multi-step accounting situations, incorporating feedback and reflective learning into scenario-based activities, training accounting educators in scenario-based instructional and assessment techniques, developing competency-based assessments of accounting principle application, and aligning accounting education with the practical analytical and decision-making competencies required in contemporary accounting and business environments in Nigeria.
