Effect of Accounting Document Coding Exercises on Students’ Financial Record Classification Skills in Nigerian Universities

 

Abstract

Accurate classification of financial records is an essential accounting competency because accounting personnel are required to identify, organize, code, and classify financial documents before transactions can be properly recorded and reported. Accounting document coding provides a systematic method of assigning appropriate codes, references, categories, and classifications to financial records such as invoices, receipts, payment vouchers, purchase documents, sales documents, bank records, payroll documents, expense records, and other source documents. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities may experience difficulties in correctly classifying financial records because of limited opportunities to engage in practical document-coding activities. Accounting Document Coding Exercises provide students with practical opportunities to examine financial documents, identify transaction characteristics, assign appropriate accounting codes, classify records, and connect source documents with relevant accounting records. Such exercises may improve students’ accuracy, analytical ability, attention to detail, records-management competence, and practical accounting skills. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Accounting Document Coding Exercises on students’ financial record classification skills in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical accounting competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant accounting knowledge and practical skills improves students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Accounting Document Coding Exercises may influence students’ financial record classification skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, financial record classification skills assessment scales, accounting document coding tasks, simulated source documents, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, classification exercises, and pre-test and post-test assessments.
