The Role of Signage in Improving Public Building Navigation
Abstract
Signage plays an important role in helping people understand and navigate public buildings, particularly facilities with complex layouts and high numbers of users. Hospitals, government offices, educational institutions, transport terminals, and cultural facilities often require visitors to locate destinations efficiently without constant assistance. Effective signage can provide clear information, reduce confusion, support independent movement, and improve the overall user experience within public buildings. This study examines the role of signage in improving navigation in public buildings, focusing on how the design, placement, visibility, and consistency of signs influence wayfinding. The study considers directional signs, identification signs, informational signs, regulatory signs, maps, symbols, and digital navigation systems. Their relationship with building entrances, circulation routes, corridors, staircases, elevators, and key destinations is assessed to understand how signage supports movement through complex environments. The effectiveness of signage depends on several visual and spatial characteristics. Typography, colour contrast, symbols, language, size, illumination, viewing distance, and sign positioning can influence how quickly users recognize and understand information. Consistent visual systems can help users form a mental understanding of building layouts, while poorly positioned or ambiguous signs may increase uncertainty and lead to unnecessary movement or dependence on staff assistance. The study also considers the needs of diverse building users, including first-time visitors, elderly persons, children, and people with visual, hearing, or cognitive difficulties. Accessible signage may incorporate tactile information, Braille, high-contrast graphics, recognizable symbols, appropriate mounting heights, and audible or digital information where necessary. Combining signage with intuitive spatial organization, visual landmarks, and clearly defined circulation routes can further strengthen wayfinding performance. Several challenges may affect the effectiveness of signage in public buildings, including inconsistent sign design, inadequate lighting, excessive visual information, poor maintenance, language barriers, and changes to building layouts. Signage may also become ineffective when it is treated as an isolated element rather than being integrated into the overall architectural wayfinding system. Effective navigation therefore requires coordination between signage design, spatial planning, accessibility, building identity, and user behaviour. The study aims to assess the contribution of signage to navigation in public buildings and identify design principles that can improve wayfinding and user experience. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, environmental graphic designers, facility managers, and building administrators in developing clearer and more inclusive navigation systems. The study can contribute to improved accessibility, reduced user confusion, greater independence, and more efficient movement within public buildings.
