The Effect of Roof Design on Indoor Temperature
Abstract
Roof design plays a significant role in determining the thermal performance of buildings and the indoor temperature experienced by occupants. As the building component most directly exposed to solar radiation, the roof can absorb substantial amounts of heat and transfer it into occupied spaces. In warm and tropical climates, inappropriate roof design may result in excessive indoor heat gain, increased indoor temperatures, thermal discomfort, and greater dependence on mechanical cooling systems. This study examines the effect of roof design on indoor temperature by considering the relationship between roof characteristics and heat transfer into building spaces. Factors such as roof shape, orientation, pitch, materials, colour, surface reflectivity, insulation, and ventilation can influence the amount of solar heat absorbed and transmitted through the roof. Understanding these relationships is essential for developing roof designs that respond effectively to local climatic conditions. Roofing materials have a direct influence on the thermal behaviour of buildings. Materials with high thermal conductivity and solar absorptance can transfer and retain more heat, while reflective roofing materials and appropriate insulation can reduce heat transmission. The use of thermal mass can also influence the rate at which heat enters and leaves indoor spaces. Therefore, selecting suitable roofing materials is an important consideration in controlling indoor temperature and improving thermal comfort. Roof geometry and ventilation also contribute to indoor thermal conditions. Roof forms that allow adequate air circulation within roof spaces can help remove accumulated heat before it reaches occupied areas. Ventilated roof cavities, raised roofs, roof overhangs, and appropriate roof pitches can support passive cooling and reduce solar heat gain. These strategies can be particularly useful in buildings located in warm climates where natural ventilation is an important component of thermal control. The effectiveness of roof design is also influenced by other building components and environmental factors. Building orientation, ceiling materials, wall construction, window design, shading devices, and surrounding vegetation can interact with roof performance to determine overall indoor temperature. Consequently, roof design should be considered as part of an integrated building envelope strategy rather than as an isolated component. Climate, construction cost, material availability, durability, and maintenance requirements should also be considered when selecting appropriate roof solutions. This study aims to assess how different roof design characteristics affect indoor temperature and thermal performance. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, building designers, and construction professionals in selecting roof configurations and materials that can minimize heat gain and improve indoor comfort. Emphasis is placed on passive cooling, roof insulation, reflective surfaces, roof ventilation, and climate-responsive design as practical approaches to reducing indoor temperature and improving building energy efficiency.
