Influence of User Adaptation on Thermal Comfort in Naturally Ventilated Buildings
Abstract
The study examines the influence of user adaptation on thermal comfort in naturally ventilated buildings, with emphasis on how occupants adjust their behaviour and use of available building features in response to changing indoor thermal conditions. User adaptation may involve actions such as adjusting windows, doors, curtains, blinds, fans, clothing, seating positions, and patterns of occupancy. Understanding these adaptive responses is important because naturally ventilated buildings depend substantially on occupant behaviour and environmental conditions to maintain acceptable levels of thermal comfort. The study will assess common adaptive behaviours adopted by building occupants and examine their relationship with perceived thermal comfort. Attention will be given to the frequency and type of window and door adjustments, use of shading devices, changes in clothing, use of portable fans, movement between indoor spaces, and other occupant-controlled responses. Indoor environmental conditions, including air temperature, relative humidity, air movement, and ventilation conditions, will also be considered in assessing how users respond to variations in the thermal environment. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Selected naturally ventilated buildings will be assessed through physical observation, indoor environmental measurements, and structured questionnaires administered to building occupants. Information on adaptive behaviour and thermal comfort perception will be collected using standardized assessment procedures and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation or inferential tests may be applied to examine relationships between adaptive behaviour and thermal comfort. The study is expected to reveal that occupants who actively adjust windows, doors, shading devices, clothing, and other available environmental controls may experience improved thermal comfort under varying indoor conditions. Differences may also be observed in the adaptive responses of occupants depending on indoor temperature, air movement, humidity, building characteristics, and duration of occupancy. The findings are expected to demonstrate that occupant behaviour plays an important role in shaping thermal comfort conditions within naturally ventilated buildings. The findings will be useful to architects, building designers, environmental designers, facility managers, and other professionals involved in the planning and management of naturally ventilated buildings. The study may provide useful information for incorporating user-controlled features and flexible environmental strategies into building design. It may also support the development of building environments that respond more effectively to occupant needs while reducing excessive dependence on mechanical cooling systems. The study will conclude by establishing how user adaptation influences thermal comfort in naturally ventilated buildings. It is recommended that building designs should provide occupants with practical opportunities to regulate their immediate thermal environment through appropriate openings, shading devices, ventilation controls, and flexible space arrangements. Further studies involving different building types, climatic conditions, and user groups are recommended to provide broader understanding of adaptive thermal comfort.
