Assessment of Biophilic Design Strategies in Contemporary Office Buildings

Abstract

Contemporary office buildings are increasingly designed to support not only functional and economic requirements but also the physical and psychological wellbeing of their occupants. As employees spend significant portions of their daily lives indoors, the quality of the workplace environment can influence comfort, concentration, productivity, satisfaction, and stress levels. Biophilic design provides an architectural approach that seeks to strengthen connections between people and the natural environment through the integration of natural elements, materials, patterns, light, vegetation, and spatial experiences. Assessing these strategies is therefore important for developing healthier and more supportive contemporary workplaces. This study assesses biophilic design strategies in contemporary office buildings, focusing on the architectural elements and environmental conditions that facilitate occupants' connection with nature. The research examines strategies such as indoor vegetation, natural daylight, views of nature, water features, natural materials, courtyards, green walls, outdoor terraces, and nature-inspired patterns. It also considers how these elements are incorporated into office layouts and building envelopes to create visually and physically engaging work environments. The study investigates the influence of natural elements on the quality of interior office spaces. Access to daylight and views of vegetation can improve visual comfort and provide occupants with opportunities for connection to outdoor environments, while natural materials and organic forms can contribute to a more varied and stimulating workplace experience. Indoor planting and green spaces may also enhance the perceived environmental quality of office interiors. The effectiveness of these strategies depends on their location, scale, accessibility, maintenance, and relationship with other architectural features. The research further considers the relationship between biophilic design and building performance. Natural ventilation, daylighting, vegetation, shading, and landscape integration can potentially contribute to thermal comfort and energy efficiency when carefully coordinated with building systems. However, inappropriate placement of vegetation or excessive glazing may create maintenance challenges, glare, heat gain, or increased resource consumption. The study therefore evaluates biophilic strategies from both experiential and environmental perspectives, recognizing the importance of balancing occupant wellbeing with practical building performance. The findings are expected to provide useful information for architects, developers, facility managers, and workplace designers seeking to incorporate biophilic principles into contemporary office buildings. The study may identify effective strategies for improving visual connection to nature, psychological comfort, workplace satisfaction, and environmental quality. It may also highlight practical considerations such as maintenance, cost, space requirements, water use, and compatibility with existing building services that influence the successful implementation of biophilic features. Ultimately, the study aims to establish a clearer understanding of the application and effectiveness of biophilic design strategies in contemporary office buildings. By examining the integration of natural elements, environmental conditions, spatial organization, and occupant experience, the research contributes to the development of healthier and more human-centred workplaces. The findings can support architectural decision-making and encourage the incorporation of meaningful connections with nature into contemporary office design without compromising functionality, efficiency, or long-term building performance.
