Sexual Dimorphism in Thyroid Cartilage Dimensions Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines sexual dimorphism in thyroid cartilage dimensions among young adults, with emphasis on differences in selected morphometric measurements between male and female individuals. The thyroid cartilage is the largest cartilage of the larynx and forms an important part of the laryngeal framework, contributing to the protection of the vocal folds, maintenance of the airway, and production of sound. Its morphology and dimensions may vary among individuals and may demonstrate sex-related differences, making its assessment relevant to anatomical, radiological, clinical, and forensic studies. The study will assess selected dimensions of the thyroid cartilage and compare the measurements between male and female young adults. The specific objectives will include measuring the height and breadth of the thyroid cartilage, assessing selected dimensions of the thyroid notch and superior and inferior horns, determining other relevant morphometric parameters, and establishing whether significant differences exist between male and female participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Measurements of the thyroid cartilage will be obtained using standardized anatomical or imaging-based procedures and appropriate anatomical landmarks. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate independent-group statistical tests will be applied to compare the measurements between male and female participants.The study is expected to reveal variation in thyroid cartilage dimensions among the young adults studied. Some measurements, particularly selected dimensions of the thyroid cartilage framework and thyroid notch, may demonstrate statistically significant differences between male and female participants, while other measurements may show considerable overlap. The findings are expected to provide information on the pattern and extent of sex-related variation in thyroid cartilage morphology within the study population. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, otolaryngologists, speech and language professionals, forensic anthropologists, and other healthcare practitioners involved in the assessment of the larynx and neck region. The study may provide useful reference information for understanding normal sex-related differences in thyroid cartilage morphology and may support the interpretation of anatomical and radiological findings. The findings may also contribute to forensic assessments where laryngeal skeletal characteristics are considered alongside other established indicators of sex. The study will conclude by documenting the pattern of sexual dimorphism in selected thyroid cartilage dimensions among young adults. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when assessing thyroid cartilage morphology, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader sex-specific reference data on thyroid cartilage morphometry.
