Sexual Dimorphism in Lingual Frenulum Dimensions Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines sexual dimorphism in lingual frenulum dimensions among young adults, with emphasis on differences in selected morphometric measurements of the lingual frenulum between male and female participants. The lingual frenulum is a fold of mucous membrane that connects the ventral surface of the tongue to the floor of the mouth and contributes to the positioning and movement of the tongue. Knowledge of its dimensions and anatomical variation is important for understanding normal oral anatomy and for supporting clinical assessment of tongue mobility, speech, swallowing, and procedures involving the floor of the mouth. The study will determine and compare selected dimensions of the lingual frenulum among male and female young adults. The specific objectives will include measuring the length, width, and other applicable dimensions of the lingual frenulum, determining the mean measurements for each sex, comparing the observed dimensions between male and female participants, and assessing the extent of variation in lingual frenulum dimensions within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data on the dimensions of the lingual frenulum will be obtained through standardized oral examination and anthropometric or morphometric measurement procedures and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate independent-group comparative tests will be applied to assess differences between male and female participants. The study is expected to reveal variations in the dimensions of the lingual frenulum among the study population. Some measurements may show differences between male and female participants, while other dimensions may demonstrate considerable overlap between the two groups. These findings are expected to provide information on the extent of sex-related variation in lingual frenulum dimensions without implying that sex alone determines individual frenulum size or configuration. The findings will be useful to anatomists, dentists, orthodontists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, speech and swallowing specialists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the tongue and floor of the mouth. The study may provide useful anatomical reference data for understanding normal variations in lingual frenulum dimensions and may support clinical assessment of tongue mobility and procedures involving the lingual frenulum. The study will conclude by documenting the dimensions and observed sex-related variations of the lingual frenulum among the study population. It is recommended that sex-related differences and individual anatomical variation be considered when evaluating lingual frenulum dimensions, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference values.
