Sexual Dimorphism in Lacrimal Gland Dimensions Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines sexual dimorphism in lacrimal gland dimensions among young adults, with emphasis on differences in selected morphometric measurements of the lacrimal gland between male and female participants. The lacrimal gland is an important exocrine structure situated in the superolateral part of the orbit and contributes to the production of the aqueous component of the tear film. Knowledge of its dimensions and anatomical variation is important for understanding normal orbital anatomy and for supporting clinical, radiological, and surgical assessment of the lacrimal apparatus. The study will determine and compare selected dimensions of the lacrimal glands among male and female young adults. The specific objectives will include measuring the length, breadth, thickness, and other applicable dimensions of the lacrimal glands, determining the mean measurements for each sex, comparing the observed dimensions between male and female participants, and assessing the extent of variation in lacrimal gland measurements within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data on the dimensions of the lacrimal glands will be obtained using standardized imaging-based or anatomical measurement procedures and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate independent-group comparative tests will be applied to assess differences between male and female participants. The study is expected to reveal variations in lacrimal gland dimensions among the study population. Some measurements may show differences between male and female participants, while other dimensions may demonstrate considerable overlap between the two groups. These findings are expected to provide information on the extent of sex-related variation in lacrimal gland dimensions without implying that sex alone determines individual gland size. The findings will be useful to anatomists, ophthalmologists, radiologists, orbital surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the lacrimal apparatus and orbital region. The study may provide useful anatomical reference data for interpreting lacrimal gland imaging, understanding normal sex-related differences, and supporting clinical and surgical procedures involving the lacrimal gland and surrounding orbital structures. The study will conclude by documenting the dimensions and observed sex-related variations of the lacrimal glands among the study population. It is recommended that sex-related differences and individual anatomical variation be considered when evaluating lacrimal gland dimensions during anatomical, radiological, and surgical assessments, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference values.
