Relationship Between Vastus Lateralis Muscle Dimensions and Thigh Length Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between vastus lateralis muscle dimensions and thigh length among young adults, with emphasis on determining whether variations in thigh length are associated with differences in selected dimensions of the muscle. The vastus lateralis is the largest component of the quadriceps femoris muscle group and occupies the lateral aspect of the anterior thigh. It plays an important role in knee extension and contributes to functional movement and stability of the lower limb. Understanding the relationship between its dimensions and thigh length may provide useful information on individual anatomical variation and musculoskeletal proportions. The study will determine selected dimensions of the vastus lateralis muscle and assess their relationship with thigh length among young adults. The specific objectives will include measuring the length and other selected dimensions of the vastus lateralis, determining the thigh length of the participants, comparing the observed measurements, and establishing the strength and direction of the relationship between muscle dimensions and thigh length. Where applicable, side-related differences in the measurements will also be documented. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adult participants will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data on the dimensions of the vastus lateralis will be obtained using standardized anatomical or imaging-based assessment procedures, while thigh length will be measured using appropriate anthropometric techniques and standardized landmarks. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation, while correlation and other appropriate inferential tests will be applied to determine the relationship between vastus lateralis dimensions and thigh length. The study is expected to reveal variations in the dimensions of the vastus lateralis among the participants and may demonstrate a measurable relationship between selected muscle dimensions and thigh length. It is recommended that standardized anatomical, anthropometric, and imaging-based procedures be used when assessing muscle dimensions and thigh measurements, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data and improve understanding of lower limb muscular proportions.
