Relationship Between Surgical Case Discussions and Retention of Applied Anatomy
Abstract
The study examines the relationship between surgical case discussions and retention of applied anatomy among undergraduate students. Applied anatomy enables students to connect knowledge of anatomical structures, relationships, landmarks, and regional organization with clinical procedures and surgical practice. However, students may experience difficulty retaining anatomical knowledge when it is learned without sufficient clinical context. Surgical case discussions provide opportunities for students to relate anatomical concepts to actual or simulated surgical situations, thereby encouraging meaningful learning, clinical reasoning, and repeated retrieval of relevant anatomical information. The study will assess the extent of students’ exposure to surgical case discussions and determine their level of retention of applied anatomical knowledge. Surgical case discussions will involve selected clinical scenarios related to surgical procedures, requiring students to identify relevant anatomical structures, anatomical relationships, landmarks, and possible implications for surgical practice. Students will be encouraged to discuss the anatomical basis of each case and explain how the structures involved relate to the clinical situation. Retention will be assessed using standardized applied anatomy questions administered at appropriate stages. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate anatomy students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data on exposure to surgical case discussions will be obtained through a structured questionnaire, while retention of applied anatomy will be assessed using standardized case-based assessment items. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate correlation or inferential statistical test will be used to determine the relationship between exposure to surgical case discussions and retention of applied anatomy. The study is expected to reveal a positive relationship between greater exposure to surgical case discussions and improved retention of applied anatomy. Students with more frequent exposure may demonstrate better recall of clinically relevant anatomical structures, surgical landmarks, anatomical relationships, and regional anatomy associated with common procedures. The contextual nature of surgical cases may make anatomical information more meaningful and easier to retrieve. However, students may continue to experience difficulties retaining information involving complex anatomical regions, unfamiliar procedures, or structures with close spatial relationships. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, curriculum planners, and undergraduate students by providing information on the potential value of surgical case discussions in strengthening applied anatomy learning. The findings may support the integration of clinically relevant surgical cases into anatomy teaching, revision, and assessment activities. Such an approach may also help students recognize the practical importance of anatomical knowledge and improve their ability to connect foundational anatomy with clinical practice. The study will conclude by determining the relationship between surgical case discussions and retention of applied anatomy. It is recommended that appropriately designed surgical case discussions be incorporated into anatomy education to provide students with meaningful opportunities to apply and retain anatomical knowledge. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations should be conducted to evaluate the long-term relationship between case-based clinical exposure and retention of applied anatomy across different anatomical regions and surgical contexts.
