Relationship Between Scapular Stability and Upper Limb Functional Performance Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between scapular stability and upper limb functional performance among undergraduate students, with emphasis on the role of scapular control in coordinated movement of the shoulder and upper limb. The scapula provides an important foundation for shoulder movement by maintaining appropriate positioning and facilitating efficient interaction between the shoulder girdle and upper limb. Understanding the relationship between scapular stability and functional performance may provide useful information on normal upper limb function and movement patterns among young adults. The study will assess scapular stability and upper limb functional performance among undergraduate students using appropriate standardized clinical and functional assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include determining the level of scapular stability among the participants, assessing upper limb functional performance, identifying differences in performance between the dominant and non-dominant limbs where applicable, and determining the relationship between scapular stability and selected measures of upper limb functional performance. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Scapular stability will be assessed using standardized clinical procedures for evaluating scapular control and movement, while upper limb functional performance will be assessed using appropriate functional performance tests. Data obtained from the assessments will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation and inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine the relationship between the study variables. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in scapular stability and upper limb functional performance among the participants. A significant relationship may be observed between scapular stability and selected measures of upper limb functional performance, with participants demonstrating better scapular control potentially showing differences in functional performance measures. Differences between the dominant and non-dominant limbs may also be observed, although the findings will describe association rather than establish a causal relationship. The findings will be useful to anatomists, physiotherapists, orthopaedic practitioners, sports medicine professionals, rehabilitation specialists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of upper limb function. Information obtained from the study may contribute to a better understanding of the functional importance of scapular stability and may support the development of appropriate assessment approaches for identifying variations in shoulder girdle control and upper limb performance among young adults. The study will conclude by documenting the relationship between scapular stability and upper limb functional performance among the study population. It is recommended that standardized procedures be used in the assessment of scapular stability and upper limb function, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to provide broader reference information on scapular control, limb dominance, and functional upper limb performance.
