Relationship Between Pterygoid Plate Width and Sphenoid Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between pterygoid plate width and sphenoid dimensions among undergraduate students, with emphasis on the anatomical association between the pterygoid plates and the broader morphology of the sphenoid bone. The pterygoid plates are prominent processes of the sphenoid bone that extend inferiorly from its body and contribute to the structural framework of the cranial base and facial skeleton. Variations in their dimensions may provide useful information on sphenoid morphology and may have relevance in anatomical identification, radiological interpretation, and surgical procedures involving the cranial base and maxillofacial region. The study aims to determine the relationship between pterygoid plate width and selected dimensions of the sphenoid bone among undergraduate students. It will specifically determine the width of the pterygoid plates, measure selected sphenoid dimensions, and assess the degree of association between pterygoid plate width and the measured sphenoid parameters. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be employed for the study. Appropriate sampling procedures will be used to select eligible undergraduate students, while measurements of the pterygoid plates and sphenoid bone will be obtained using suitable imaging-based or osteological assessment methods and standardized anatomical landmarks. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation, while correlation analysis will be used to determine the relationships between pterygoid plate width and selected sphenoid dimensions. Appropriate statistical tests will be applied to determine the significance of the observed relationships. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in pterygoid plate width and selected sphenoid dimensions among the participants. The findings may demonstrate varying degrees of association between pterygoid plate width and the measured sphenoid parameters, providing additional information on the structural organization and individual variation of the sphenoid bone and its processes. The findings are expected to be useful to anatomists, radiologists, neurosurgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, and other professionals involved in the assessment of the cranial base and facial skeleton. The study may provide anatomical reference information that can support interpretation of cranial imaging, understanding of sphenoid morphology, surgical planning, and further research involving craniofacial and skull base anatomy. The study will conclude by establishing the nature of the relationship between pterygoid plate width and selected sphenoid dimensions among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based measurement procedures be adopted in studies of the sphenoid bone and that further investigations involving larger and more diverse populations be conducted to provide broader reference data on pterygoid plate and sphenoid morphology.
