Relationship Between Pterion Position and Sphenoid Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between pterion position and sphenoid dimensions among undergraduate students, with emphasis on the anatomical association between the pterion and the underlying structures of the sphenoid bone. The pterion is a clinically important region on the lateral aspect of the skull where the frontal, parietal, temporal, and sphenoid bones meet. Its position and relationship with the sphenoid bone may vary among individuals and may be relevant to cranial morphology, radiological interpretation, and surgical procedures involving the lateral cranial region. The study aims to determine the relationship between pterion position and selected sphenoid dimensions among undergraduate students. It will specifically determine the position of the pterion in relation to standardized cranial landmarks, measure selected dimensions of the sphenoid bone, and assess the degree of association between pterion position and the measured sphenoid parameters. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be employed for the study. Appropriate sampling procedures will be used to select eligible undergraduate students, while pterion position and sphenoid dimensions will be assessed using suitable imaging-based or osteological methods and standardized anatomical landmarks. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation, while correlation and appropriate comparative statistical analyses will be used to determine the relationship between pterion position and selected sphenoid dimensions. Statistical tests will be applied to determine the significance of the observed relationships. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in pterion position and selected sphenoid dimensions among the participants and may demonstrate varying degrees of association between the measured parameters. The findings are expected to provide additional information on the relationship between surface cranial landmarks and deeper sphenoid structures and contribute to the understanding of individual variation in lateral cranial morphology. The findings are expected to be useful to anatomists, radiologists, neurosurgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, forensic practitioners, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the lateral cranial region. The study may provide anatomical reference information that can support radiological interpretation, identification of cranial landmarks, surgical planning, and further research involving pterion and sphenoid morphology. The study will conclude by establishing the nature of the relationship between pterion position and selected sphenoid dimensions among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based measurement procedures be adopted in studies involving the pterion and sphenoid bone and that further investigations involving larger and more diverse populations be conducted to provide broader reference data on their morphological relationships.
