Relationship Between Palmaris Longus Tendon Length and Hand Length Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between palmaris longus tendon length and hand length among young adults, with emphasis on determining whether variation in tendon length is associated with differences in overall hand length. The palmaris longus is a superficial muscle of the anterior compartment of the forearm whose tendon extends toward the palmar aponeurosis and contributes to tension of the palmar fascia and wrist flexion. Its tendon is also of clinical interest because of its potential use as a donor structure in reconstructive procedures. The study will determine the palmaris longus tendon length and hand length among young adults and assess the relationship between the two measurements. The specific objectives will include measuring palmaris longus tendon length, determining hand length, comparing the measurements between the right and left hands where applicable, and establishing the strength and direction of the relationship between tendon length and hand length. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Palmaris longus tendon length and hand length will be obtained using standardized anatomical landmarks and anthropometric measurement procedures, with appropriate clinical examination techniques used to identify and assess the tendon. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation, while correlation analysis and other appropriate inferential tests will be applied to determine the relationship between the variables. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in palmaris longus tendon length and hand length among the participants. A positive or otherwise measurable association may be observed between tendon length and hand length, although the strength and statistical significance of the relationship will depend on the characteristics of the study population. Differences between the right and left hands may also be observed where bilateral measurements are assessed. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, orthopaedic surgeons, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, physiotherapists, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the upper limb. The study may provide useful reference information on palmaris longus tendon dimensions in relation to hand size and may contribute to anatomical understanding of the forearm and hand. The findings may also be relevant to clinical procedures in which the palmaris longus tendon is considered as a potential donor structure. The study will conclude by documenting the dimensions of the palmaris longus tendon and hand and determining their relationship among the study population. It is recommended that standardized anthropometric and anatomical measurement procedures be used when assessing palmaris longus tendon and hand dimensions, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data.
