Relationship Between Metacarpal Dimensions and Hand Breadth Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between metacarpal dimensions and hand breadth among undergraduate students, with emphasis on determining the association between the dimensions of the metacarpal bones and the overall breadth of the hand. The metacarpals form the skeletal framework of the palm and contribute to hand structure, stability, grip, and functional movement. Understanding the relationship between metacarpal dimensions and hand breadth may provide useful information on normal skeletal proportions and anatomical variation among young adults. The study will assess the dimensions of the metacarpal bones and determine their relationship with hand breadth among the study population. The specific objectives will include measuring the length and breadth of selected metacarpals, determining hand breadth, examining the relationship between metacarpal dimensions and hand breadth, and comparing the observed patterns among the different metacarpal bones where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Metacarpal dimensions will be obtained using standardized anthropometric or osteological measurement procedures and appropriate measuring instruments, while hand breadth will be measured using established anatomical landmarks. The data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation analysis and other appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine the strength and significance of the observed relationships. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in metacarpal dimensions and hand breadth among the participants. The findings may demonstrate positive or varying degrees of association between selected metacarpal measurements and hand breadth, with the strength of the relationship potentially differing among individual metacarpals. It is recommended that standardized measurement procedures be used when assessing metacarpal and hand dimensions, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data and improve understanding of variations in hand morphology.
