Relationship Between Carpal Tunnel Dimensions and Hand Measurements Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between carpal tunnel dimensions and hand measurements among young adults, with emphasis on determining whether external hand characteristics are associated with the internal dimensions of the carpal tunnel. The carpal tunnel is an osteofibrous passageway at the wrist formed by the carpal bones and flexor retinaculum, through which the median nerve and flexor tendons pass into the hand. Understanding the relationship between carpal tunnel dimensions and hand measurements may provide useful information on individual anatomical variation and the structural characteristics of the wrist. The study will determine selected dimensions of the carpal tunnel and selected hand measurements among young adults. The specific objectives will include measuring the length, width, and depth of the carpal tunnel, determining hand length, hand breadth, and other relevant hand measurements, assessing the relationship between carpal tunnel dimensions and hand measurements, and determining the strength and direction of any observed associations. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Carpal tunnel dimensions will be assessed using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging-based procedures, while hand measurements will be obtained through standardized anthropometric techniques using suitable measuring instruments. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation and appropriate inferential tests will be used to determine the strength and statistical significance of relationships between the variables. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in both carpal tunnel dimensions and hand measurements among the participants. Some carpal tunnel dimensions may show positive or negative associations with selected hand measurements, while other dimensions may demonstrate weak or no significant relationships. The findings are expected to provide information on the extent to which external hand measurements correspond with internal anatomical dimensions of the carpal tunnel without implying a causal relationship. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, orthopaedic surgeons, neurologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the wrist and hand. The study may provide useful reference data for understanding the relationship between hand morphology and carpal tunnel structure and may support anatomical interpretation, imaging assessment, and procedures involving the median nerve and flexor tendons. The study will conclude by documenting the relationship between carpal tunnel dimensions and selected hand measurements among the study population. It is recommended that standardized morphometric and imaging procedures be used when assessing the carpal tunnel and hand dimensions, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data.
