Relationship Between Anatomical Snuffbox Dimensions and Hand Length Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between anatomical snuffbox dimensions and hand length among young adults, with emphasis on determining whether variations in hand length are associated with differences in the measurable dimensions of the anatomical snuffbox. The anatomical snuffbox is a clinically important triangular depression located on the dorsolateral aspect of the wrist and hand, through which the radial artery and branches of the superficial radial nerve are closely related. Knowledge of its anatomical dimensions is relevant to the assessment of wrist injuries, vascular procedures, tendon-related conditions, and anatomical variations of the hand. The study will determine the dimensions of the anatomical snuffbox among young adults and assess their relationship with hand length. The specific objectives will include measuring selected anatomical snuffbox dimensions, determining the hand length of the participants, comparing the observed measurements between the right and left hands where applicable, and establishing the strength and direction of the relationship between anatomical snuffbox dimensions and hand length. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Anatomical snuffbox dimensions and hand length will be obtained using standardized anthropometric procedures and appropriate anatomical landmarks. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation and other appropriate inferential statistical tests will be used to determine the relationship between anatomical snuffbox dimensions and hand length. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in the dimensions of the anatomical snuffbox among the young adults studied. Differences may also be observed between the right and left hands, while hand length may demonstrate a measurable relationship with one or more anatomical snuffbox dimensions. The strength and direction of any observed association will be determined statistically, providing information on the extent to which hand length corresponds with variations in anatomical snuffbox measurements. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, radiologists, orthopaedic surgeons, hand surgeons, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of wrist and hand conditions. The study may provide useful reference data for understanding the surface anatomy of the anatomical snuffbox and may support clinical interpretation, anatomical education, physical examination, and procedures involving structures located within or around the region. The study will conclude by documenting the dimensions of the anatomical snuffbox and determining their relationship with hand length among young adults. It is recommended that standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures be used when assessing the anatomical snuffbox, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference values and examine possible variations across different populations.
