Morphometric Assessment of the Sternothyroid Muscle Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The study examines the morphometric characteristics of the sternothyroid muscle among undergraduate students, with emphasis on selected measurements of its length, width, thickness, and overall dimensions. The sternothyroid muscle is an infrahyoid muscle located in the anterior neck and extends from the posterior surface of the manubrium of the sternum to the oblique line of the thyroid cartilage. It plays an important role in depressing and stabilizing the larynx and is anatomically related to important structures within the anterior neck. Knowledge of its morphometric characteristics is therefore relevant to the understanding of normal anatomical variation and clinical procedures involving the neck. The study will determine selected morphometric parameters of the sternothyroid muscle among undergraduate students. The specific objectives will include measuring the length, width, and thickness of the sternothyroid muscle, determining the mean values and range of the measurements, assessing variations in its dimensions within the study population, and comparing the observed measurements between the right and left sides where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students or suitable anatomical specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. Measurements of the sternothyroid muscle will be obtained using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging-based, anthropometric, or osteological procedures where applicable. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests will be applied to assess side-related differences and other relevant comparisons. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in the dimensions of the sternothyroid muscle among the undergraduate students studied. Differences may be observed in muscle length, width, and thickness, with some measurements potentially demonstrating variation between the right and left sides. The findings are expected to provide quantitative information on the morphometric characteristics of the sternothyroid muscle and contribute to the understanding of anatomical variability within the study population. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, otorhinolaryngologists, head and neck surgeons, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the anterior neck region. The study may provide useful reference data for anatomical education, interpretation of imaging findings, surgical planning, and procedures involving the infrahyoid muscles and adjacent structures. The study will conclude by documenting the morphometric characteristics of the sternothyroid muscle among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures be used when assessing the sternothyroid muscle, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference values and improve understanding of its anatomical variability.
