Morphological Variation of the Transverse Foramen of Cervical Vertebrae Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the transverse foramen of cervical vertebrae among young adults. The transverse foramen is a characteristic feature of the cervical vertebrae and provides passage for the vertebral artery, vertebral veins, and associated sympathetic nerve fibres. Its size, shape, symmetry, and number may vary among individuals and across cervical vertebral levels. Knowledge of these variations is important for understanding cervical vertebral anatomy and may be relevant to radiological interpretation, vascular assessment, and surgical procedures involving the cervical spine. The study aims to determine the morphological characteristics of the transverse foramina of cervical vertebrae among young adults. It will specifically assess variations in the size, shape, number, and symmetry of the transverse foramina and determine their distribution across the cervical vertebral levels. The study will also document the frequency of identified morphological patterns within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Young adults who meet the predetermined inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. The transverse foramina will be examined using standardized osteological or appropriate imaging-based assessment procedures, with measurements taken using defined anatomical landmarks and suitable instruments. The information may support interpretation of cervical spine imaging, recognition of anatomical variations, surgical planning, and consideration of the relationship between cervical vertebral morphology and structures passing through the transverse foramina. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the transverse foramina of cervical vertebrae among young adults. It will recommend the use of standardized osteological and imaging assessment procedures in future investigations and encourage further studies involving larger and more diverse populations to establish comprehensive reference data on transverse foramen morphology.
