Morphological Variation of the Superior Orbital Fissure Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the superior orbital fissure among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its shape, size, and anatomical configuration. The superior orbital fissure is an important opening between the greater and lesser wings of the sphenoid bone that provides a pathway for several cranial nerves, the superior ophthalmic vein, and associated neurovascular structures. Knowledge of its morphology is important for understanding orbital and skull base anatomy and may contribute to the interpretation of anatomical and radiological variations. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the superior orbital fissure using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging-based or osteological assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying the different morphological patterns of the fissure, determining its measurable dimensions, documenting variations in its shape and configuration, and assessing right and left side differences where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students or suitable cranial imaging or osteological specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment procedure employed. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the superior orbital fissure will be obtained using standardized procedures and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Appropriate inferential statistical tests will also be applied where necessary to determine significant differences or side-related variation. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the superior orbital fissure, including variations in its shape, dimensions, and anatomical configuration. Differences between the right and left sides may also be observed, with some measurements potentially showing statistically significant side-related variation.
