Morphological Variation of the Radial Nerve in the Arm Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the radial nerve in the arm among young adults, with emphasis on differences in its size, course, branching pattern, configuration, and anatomical relationships with surrounding structures. The radial nerve is a major terminal branch of the brachial plexus and provides motor and sensory innervation to important structures of the upper limb. Its pathway through the posterior compartment of the arm and its close relationship with the humerus make it clinically important, particularly during procedures involving the arm. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics and variations is therefore important for understanding upper limb neuroanatomy and supporting clinical practice. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the radial nerve in the arm among young adults using appropriate standardized anatomical and imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include determining selected dimensions of the nerve, documenting variations in its course and branching pattern, assessing its anatomical relationships with the humerus and surrounding muscles, and determining the frequency and distribution of the observed morphological patterns among the participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, while the radial nerve will be evaluated using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging or anatomical examination procedures. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to determine significant differences in the observed morphological characteristics. The study is expected to reveal variations in the morphology of the radial nerve in the arm among the participants. Differences may be observed in nerve dimensions, course, branching pattern, and relationships with the triceps brachii, brachialis, and other surrounding structures. Variations in the level and pattern of branching may also be identified, with some morphological characteristics potentially showing statistically significant differences between individuals or between the right and left sides. These findings are expected to demonstrate the anatomical diversity of the radial nerve within the arm. The findings will be useful to anatomists, neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, trauma surgeons, radiologists, anesthetists, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the upper limb. The study may provide useful reference information for interpreting nerve imaging, planning surgical procedures involving the arm and humerus, administering regional nerve blocks, and reducing the risk of inadvertent radial nerve injury during clinical interventions. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the radial nerve in the arm among young adults. It is recommended that awareness of normal variations in radial nerve morphology and anatomical relationships be considered during anatomical, radiological, and surgical assessment of the upper limb, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on radial nerve anatomy.
