Morphological Variation of the Popliteus Muscle Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the popliteus muscle among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its size, shape, fiber arrangement, attachment, and general anatomical configuration. The popliteus is a small triangular muscle located at the posterior aspect of the knee and plays an important role in initiating knee flexion and contributing to rotational stability of the knee joint. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics and variations is important for understanding the functional anatomy of the knee and for supporting clinical assessment of structures within the popliteal region. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the popliteus muscle among undergraduate students using appropriate standardized anatomical and imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include determining selected dimensions of the muscle, identifying variations in its shape and fiber arrangement, documenting differences in its attachment and anatomical relationships, and comparing the observed morphological characteristics between the right and left sides where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, while the popliteus muscle will be evaluated using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging or anatomical examination procedures. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to determine significant differences in the observed morphological characteristics. The study is expected to reveal variations in the size, shape, fiber arrangement, attachment, and general configuration of the popliteus muscle among the participants. Differences may be observed in selected muscle dimensions and anatomical relationships, with some characteristics potentially showing statistically significant variation between individuals or between the right and left sides. These findings are expected to demonstrate the presence of normal morphological diversity in the popliteus muscle within the study population. The findings will be useful to anatomists, orthopedic surgeons, physiotherapists, sports medicine practitioners, radiologists, rehabilitation specialists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the knee. The study may provide useful reference information for interpreting musculoskeletal imaging, understanding variations in popliteus muscle anatomy, supporting clinical assessment of the posterolateral knee, and improving anatomical planning for procedures involving the knee and popliteal region. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the popliteus muscle among undergraduate students. It is recommended that awareness of normal variations in popliteus muscle morphology be considered during anatomical, radiological, and clinical assessment of the knee, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on popliteus muscle anatomy.
