Morphological Variation of the Popliteal Fossa Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the popliteal fossa among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its shape, dimensions, boundaries, and overall anatomical configuration. The popliteal fossa is a diamond-shaped region located on the posterior aspect of the knee and serves as an important anatomical passage for the popliteal artery, popliteal vein, tibial nerve, and common fibular nerve. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics is important for understanding anatomical variation and for supporting clinical assessment and procedures involving the knee and posterior aspect of the lower limb. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the popliteal fossa among undergraduate students using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging-based or anatomical assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying the different shapes and configurations of the popliteal fossa, determining its measurable dimensions, documenting variations in its boundaries and anatomical relationships, and comparing selected morphological characteristics between the right and left sides where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the popliteal fossa will be obtained using standardized anatomical or imaging-based procedures, depending on the assessment method employed. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to assess observed differences. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the popliteal fossa, including variations in its shape, length, width, depth, boundaries, and overall configuration. Differences between the right and left sides may also be observed in selected dimensions or morphological features. The findings are expected to demonstrate that the morphology of the popliteal fossa varies among individuals and that such variation may influence the anatomical relationships of the neurovascular structures located within the region. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, orthopaedic surgeons, vascular surgeons, neurologists, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the knee and posterior lower limb. The study may provide useful anatomical reference information for understanding normal variation in popliteal fossa morphology and may support the interpretation of imaging findings and procedures involving the popliteal artery, popliteal vein, tibial nerve, common fibular nerve, and surrounding structures. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the popliteal fossa among the study population. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating the popliteal fossa, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data.
