Morphological Variation of the Lingula of the Left Lung Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the lingula of the left lung among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its shape, size, configuration, and anatomical appearance. The lingula is a tongue-like projection of the superior lobe of the left lung and is anatomically related to the cardiac impression of the lung. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics is important for understanding normal variations in pulmonary anatomy and for supporting accurate interpretation of radiological findings and procedures involving the left lung. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the lingula of the left lung among undergraduate students and document the different patterns of variation observed. The specific objectives will include identifying the different shapes of the lingula, determining its measurable dimensions, documenting variations in its configuration, and assessing the frequency of the different morphological patterns within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. The morphology and dimensions of the lingula will be assessed using an appropriate imaging-based anatomical procedure capable of demonstrating the structure of the left lung. Further studies involving larger and more diverse populations are recommended to establish broader reference data on the morphology and dimensions of the pulmonary lingula.
