Morphological Variation of the Infraorbital Foramen Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the infraorbital foramen among young adults, with emphasis on differences in its shape, size, position, and anatomical configuration. The infraorbital foramen is an important opening on the anterior surface of the maxilla that transmits the infraorbital nerve, artery, and vein. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics is important for understanding maxillofacial anatomy and may provide useful information for clinical procedures involving the midface, orbit, and maxilla. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the infraorbital foramen using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging-based or osteological assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying the different morphological patterns of the infraorbital foramen, determining its measurable dimensions, documenting its position in relation to surrounding anatomical landmarks, and assessing right and left side differences where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults or suitable cranial imaging or osteological specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment procedure employed. Data on the morphology, dimensions, and position of the infraorbital foramen will be obtained using standardized procedures and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Appropriate inferential statistical tests will also be applied where necessary to determine significant differences or side-related variation. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the infraorbital foramen, including variations in its shape, dimensions, position, and anatomical configuration.
