Morphological Variation of the Inferior Articular Facets of the Axis Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the inferior articular facets of the axis among young adults, with emphasis on differences in their shape, size, orientation, and anatomical configuration. The axis is the second cervical vertebra and plays an important role in supporting the upper cervical spine and facilitating movements of the head and neck. The inferior articular facets of the axis contribute to articulation with the third cervical vertebra, and variations in their morphology may influence the structural and functional characteristics of the cervical spine. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the inferior articular facets of the axis and document the patterns of variation observed among the study population. The specific objectives will include identifying the different shapes of the inferior articular facets, determining their measurable dimensions, assessing their orientation and surface configuration, documenting variations between the right and left facets where applicable, and describing the overall morphological patterns of the facets among the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults or suitable axis vertebrae will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. The inferior articular facets will be examined using standardized osteological or imaging-based procedures, and relevant dimensions will be obtained using appropriate measuring instruments. The data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests will be applied to assess relevant differences in facet morphology and dimensions. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the inferior articular facets of the axis among the participants.
